Well I hope everyone congratulates the Iraqis on doing in months what took us Americans YEARS TO DO!
Kudos to them!

The Iraqis need to get their show moving. The Americans don't intend to stick around any longer than necessary.

"Does the Kurds have the right to secede? Are women protected of their God-Given rights? These two are the most important points to agree on in this Constitution."

Recall that women did not have the right to vote and slavery was legal when the U.S. constitution was ratified. For what its worth I suspect the Iraqi constitution will best us on at least those two points.

BUMP!

From Iraq the Model:

In a press conference that just ended in Baghdad, Jawad Al-Maliki and Jalal Addin Al-Saghir (CDC members from the United Alliance) said that the Sunni politicians still have reservations on federalism but they expected that the draft will easily get the approval of 2rds of the Assembly members.

"Frankly speaking, we cannot wait for the Sunni forever; we have a deadline to respect and if they don't agree with what was written in the draft they can say that in the referendum but we're still having talks with the Sunni politicians" said Jalal Addin (3rd image).

Regarding Islam and the constitution: it was agreed upon that no laws that are against the widely agreed upon values of Islam can be issued and no laws that are against the values of democracy and human rights can be issued.
Natural resources according to the draft will be managed in cooperation between the central government and the local administrations of the federal states/provinces.

Some Freepers - contemplating the ongoing violence in Iraq - make judgments about the intrinsic backwardness of the Iraqi people. I've been tempted to that same kind of thinking, and then I remember that we had a Civil War that took 600,000 lives. Somehow these minor details of history are forgotten. :-)

Yes, but they'll continue to beat the drum that the Sunni's are unhappy, so it's meaningless.

Frankly, the Sunni's had it good for far too long under Sadam, so if they are unhappy, boo-freakin-hoo.

If the Sunnis wanted a constitution they could live with, they should have encouraged their people to vote when they had the chance. This is how it works, folks: if you don't play, you can't win.

The old liberal tactic. If one is unhappy, then ALL are unhappy.......Spread misery, contain the joy...........

The Sunni Arabs are only 20% of the total population and they want to control the remaining 80% with brutal force as they did under Saddam terrorist regime. The new Iraq will put them in the place where they belong and if they do not like it and decide to fight a civil war, they will be crushed in few months and then they will have nothing.

It's just more of the MSM trying to make a story. Judging from FReeper comments, it seems targeted at Republicans.

This news hasn't gone over well with Democratic leaders from Moveon.org who have now started a fire in Central Park and have begun to chant "Evil Bush ruin trolls life".

Those of us at CNN are also deeply saddened at this news.

You can't expect too much progress all at once. How many years was it from the time our Constitution was approved until women got the right to vote? About 131 years, right? How many years was it from the time our Constitution was approved until women were permitted to join the Kiwanis Club? About 185 to 190 years, right? So be patient and don't sweat it.

It will be interesting to see if the President addresses this latest development when he speaks in Utah later this afternoon.
