WASHINGTON The entrance of Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist into the race to replace Christopher Cox in Congress could at most turn this special election into a referendum on federal immigration policy and at least turn up the heat on an already politically volatile issue.
"I'm here today because, like you, I have grown weary of the decades-long refusal of the federal government to enforce immigration laws," Gilchrist said Friday on KFI/640 radio's "John and Ken Show," broadcast live from a hotel near the Ontario airport.
"It is far better to have men and women in public office who don't have to be pressured to do the right thing. That's why today I am formally announcing my candidacy for Congress in California's 48th District.''
Gilchrist, who is running as an American Independent Party candidate, and Republican state Sen. John Campbell, the candidate party leaders and political experts say is the favorite in that race, joined other anti-immigration activists and lawmakers at the event, a kickoff of the campaign to put a California border-police initiative on the 2006 ballot.
Immigration has long been one of those topics that ebbs and flows in the public interest. But it has not been an issue, political analysts say, that elections historically have turned on.
However, a combination of factors in the post-9/11 atmosphere may mean that that political calculus is changing. There is increasing activism among those seeking a crackdown on illegal immigration. The issue is spreading beyond just a few border states.
And in recent days, the Democratic governors of Arizona and New Mexico declared emergencies in border counties in their states because of the violence associated with the smuggling of illegal immigrants across the Mexican border. Their actions allow them to use emergency funds to beef up police at the border.

That is what we need - more TRUE Americans!
"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in the crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."
--- Thomas Payne
On the surface, that's a slap in the face for Republican governors Perry (Texas) and Arnold, however I wouldn't trust Richardson as far as I could throw him. Remember, he harbored the dimwitted TX senators who ran out on their duties for weeks on end wasting hundreds of thousands of taxpayers dollars. Mandating thousands of dollars toward a fence for a local stockyard proves Richardson is more concerned with his next bbq than the safety of the citizens of NM. Sure, they have money for the "border counties" but the violence doesn't magically stop yards from the border.
Well he is going to lose now, American Independent Party? Isnt that from like the 1970s? He and the Republican are probably now going to split the vote, and the Democrat will get elected and support amnesty.
oh well i've had it with the lesser of two evils arguement my support of republicans has hereby ceased until my small alabama town returns to some semblance of what it used to be (that would be without the 10000 or so hispanics that have flooded our community in TWO years)oh and we just had a child test positive for TB in one of our local schools (i'll let you guess on his ethnic origin)
America's a two party system, always has been and always will be, dont waste your vote. The Republicans will change their tune after 2006 and definitely by 2008. But I think Gilcrest should run as a Republican, he'd win the primary, and because the district is so conservative Gilchrest vs. the Democrat, Gilcrest would win. But as an Independent he and the Republican will lose, just look how many Independents are currrently elected to the House, just one and thats because in Vermont the Liberals can afford to split the vote.

Is that any different from the Republicans who support amnesty, including the President?
Gilcrist running as an independant is a huge mistake.
Minutemen Heros BUMP.
Are you crazy? This is exactly the kick in the ass that the GOP needs.
I have nothing against John Campbell, he's a decent guy, but that's all. He's establishment. The Bush-Rove-Dreier Open Borders wing of the party needs a beating like this that will MAYBE convince them that immigration is an issue people care about - REGARDSLESS of party loyalty.
I hope Gilchrest wins, I'll be walking for him and sending a check, if the GOP gets mad, screw 'em.
So, you consur with the Pat Buchanon philosophy of attaining political obsurity?
Gilchrist needs to run and win as a pub.
The gold ring on the political merry-go-round is within Gilchrist's reach.....and wouldn't you know he's mounting the wrong horse.

I would kind of like him to run for Sanchez's seat in Garden Grove/ Santa Ana...
The Vietnamese and the Mexican/Americans would vote for him.
Hmmm, you right away come out with the Buchanan slam against Gilchrist, eh? Don't like the "spoiler" coming in to challenge the Party's annointed one?
This has NOTHING to do with the GOP needing to win. The paradigm has moved beyond "Republicans always need to win and Democrats always need to lose". Wake up. The good guys need to win, and lately a lot of Republicans have been the bad guys and they need to lose. People of PRINCIPLE need to win.
This race is not about the GOP, it will not lose its House majority over a single district, and the American Independent Party will not threaten Republicans elsewhere. People will support Gilchrest because they are sick and tired of being told what to think by Bush, et al, in contrast to whatr their seeing with their own eyes in their own back yards.
People don't like being stabbed in the back by those they thought they could trust, Bob.
Republicans are sick of being told their the party of law & order, national security and protecting jobs, and then see their party's leader's embrace amnesty, in-state tuition, "free trade" and more for illegal aliens and their exporting states. I'm sick of having to be a Republican WHO HAS run for office, having to defend myself and my GOP (which more and more does not deserve it) against those who come to me and gripe and justifiably get sick and quit the GOP.
I wonder if he'll draw new voters into the race who otherwise wouldn't vote.
not really, this is a conservative district and the only problem may be that he splits the conservative vote
He was legally proscribed from running as anything else. I checked the law on that one personally. Traduce the man all you want, and as one who lives in this CD, I will be voting for Campbell, but facts are facts.
A rather hubristic take. Pubbies are a diverse lot. Just read FR. The free trade hit was particularly unfortunate. I would have great trouble voting for a protectionist Pubbie.
