Valley Illegals Fear Crackdown Is Coming

Arizona and New Mexico are under a state of emergency Friday night. The governors of both states made the declaration to free up money to increase Mexican border patrols. It is an effort to fight illegal immigration.

Illegal immigrants in Nevada say it's only a matter of time before a similar state of emergency is issued here. They fear being thrown out of the country, unable to make money from jobs they find here in the states.

Illegal immigrants in southern Nevada believe it's only a matter of time until authorities here crack down on them. Here in the valley, day jobs for illegals are starting to dry up. There's time when there's work and there's time when there's not.

The states of emergency in New Mexico and Arizona may have a dramatic effect on the influx of illegals into Nevada. Many cross the Mexican border into Arizona and then travel, or are smuggled up Highway 93 into Las Vegas and beyond. Nearly all are looking for opportunities to make money. "We only want to work we don't do anything wrong. If they hire us fine if they don't they don't."

This 2003 federal homeland security report guess-timates over 101,000 illegal immigrants live in Nevada. A UNLV study asserts illegals contribute 16 billion a year to our local economy.

"It's quite evident we have to focus our efforts, our priorities, our resources on the greatest risks." Russ Knocke with federal homeland security tells Eyewitness News, the current approach of trying to dismantle human smuggling rings is the way to go hoping to stop potential terrorists from entering the country.

But Arizona and New Mexico declaring these emergencies may force the government's hand to once again target illegal alien clusters in large American cities, like Las Vegas. "We intend to work as closely as we can based on the needs of the states."

The increasing risk and the increasing debate has some illegals thinking twice about having come here in the first place. "We wait here for awhile. If we don't find work we go back to Mexico." But until a crackdown begins, these men will continue looking for work, day-by-day, dollar-by-dollar.

A spokeswoman for Governor Kenny Guinn says there are no current plans to issue a State of Emergency for illegal immigration here. Eyewitness News has learned that next week the federal Department of Homeland Security will meet in Washington to discuss illegal immigration measures along the Mexican border.

***Without the illegals working as maids in the hotels/casinos, they wouldn't be able to operate...there's your 16 Billion. /t-i-c****

Certainly they would be able to operate, they would just have to pay a decent wage.

The Minutemen did more to halt illegal immigration in one month than the federal and state governments have done since 1980. As long as they can call worthless photo ops and get TV sound bites, our officials think we won't catch on that they always manage to make any situation worse.

Oh great. Now they will all flock to the BAy area and Sonoma county in Calif. The illegals are treated like kings and queens on the left coast.

I'm curious, you've always said Napolitano was pro illegal alien and now she's declared a state of emergency and asked for money from the feds to help close the border. Why do you suppose that is?

So, when GW does nothing to help her she can claim: A. I tried but nobody helped. B. It's not my jurisdiction. C. Behind closed doors she can say, "I knew they wouldn't do anything so you guys (illegals) are still safe here."

She is trying to put the onus on GW and the feds knowing they won't really do anything. Except maybe this:Gritty ads mean to stop immigrants from risking children on crossings

I'm having trouble understanding how 101,000 illegals can contribute 16 billion a year to the economy of Las Vegas.

Same here. And they say nothing about how much illegals take out of the economy with the benefits they steal.

Well, it looks like everything is finally under control ... a bunch of bureaucrats is going to sit around a table and talk about it. Maybe they'll set up a blue ribbon commission to study the problem and prepare a report.

So true. I remember the old days when Vegas never turned a profit. Thank goodness for the illegals.

If more labor is needed, and Americans "don't want to do the work", then let in those people who have actually bothered to apply for citizenship the correct way.

They'll come to Arkansas as well. Our Governor supports them 100%.

Oh for heaven's sake. All they have to do is get some corrupt lawyer and corrupt judge to take away some other rancher's land, and give it to the illegals, and they'll be set for life.

That's $160,000 each.

How the hell is that?

So, when GW does nothing to help her she can claim: A. I tried but nobody helped.

On the other hand, she vetoed the Prop 200 voted in by citizens (including 47% of legal immigrants). I don't understand that either, it passed and is in effect? But how is that if she vetoed it. I'm not real up on Arizona state so perhaps I'm missing something.

It doesn't make sense to me unless she just wants more federal money but it would be tagged for closing the border wouldn't it? Which would just go back to "she's a politician" and only vetoed Prop 200 to make her look good with potential future voters.

I don't know, it seems she's on both sides of the coin and this confuses me.

I'm not sure what to make of this - is it possible the Dims think that even if they alienate much of the Latino voters they will pick up enough weak conservative voters to make up for it? Before praising the Dims\ ctions, stop and think about motives, both short term and long term and try to picture them staying consistent once they feel they have a wedge they can apply.

And its not just 160K per employee, its 160k per person. For a family of 5, they would be pulling down an average of 800k/year. Amazing that so many journalists/academics think most readers will just accept their figures and not challenge their math.

I still can't believe that! Any updates on that, do you know if they're going to appeal? How can that happen in the US!!!

I just saw that the thread was locked, read bits and pieces, need to go back and read it all. Was just too depressing.

No, I was serious, I can't understand how she can be on both sides of the issue. Veto Prop 200 and turn around and declare it a disaster area. She wants to encourage state funds to help illegals but then asks for federal funds to stop them.

It's like telling a child, here's a piece of candy but when he reaches for it, she slaps his hand. Better to take the candy away.

Yes they did and it was wonderful to see them embarrass the government. No wonder they're called vigilantes.
