How simple your life must be...
It's probably a school thing. Instead of having meaningful experiences that help to form his views, he's taken away from his natural environment and dropped off in a regimented institution to be incubated and drilled for years on end. Either that, or he's been through it already and hasn't gotten over it (yet?).
