Fred Barnes waves white flag on border issue (Special Report "All Ster Panel)
Fox News Channel ^ | August 19, 2005 | DTogo

In the final segment of the Brit Hume's "All Star" panel (Brian Wilson was filling in for Brit), the topic was the recent state of emergency declarations by NM and AZ governors. Asked if the Governator might be next, Charles Krauthammer suggested a wall is necessary to stem if not halt the flow of illegal aliens so that they can enter the U.S. legally in designated points (yes!). At his turn, Fred Barnes predicated his comments with the usual "Look..." and then said "we have to accept a certain number of illegal aliens" and that a wall would be too long and expensive. He also implied that we'd need about ten times the border agents we have today and that isn't practical either.

In other words, no solution from Fred, just business as usual and a white flag on our border. I don't recall Fred complaining that $85Bn a year is too much to spend fighting terrorist overseas, or that establishing a democracy in Afghanistan and Iraq are insurmountable tasks. I don't think so either.

But why is spending money to secure our borders, with a wall and/or more agents, either too expensive or too difficult for the Country of the Can-do? Are we just supposed to "accept a certain number of terrorists (maybe)" sneaking into the US from Mexico to do who knows what - because the GOP is hooked on cheap labor donors or is now too P.C. to label an ILLEGAL alien as such and enforce our laws?

Very disappointing...

What is the mindset that prevents pundits of the Washington elite from seeing the solutions to the problem?

Deporting entire families might get their attention. The Constitutional provisions regarding automatic citizenship for the "native born" needs to be modified to exclude the children of illegals.

Kinda odd, particularly since so many of them live in southern Maryland and northern Virginia, where there are a ton of illegals. My guess is that their attitude is similar to that of the folks in South Florida: as long as they're out of our gated community by sundown, we're OK with it.

Charles was for building a WALL to keep them out, and 10 times the Border agents to patrol it! That is my kind of plan!!!

"But why is spending money to secure our borders, with a wall and/or more agents, either too expensive or too difficult for the Country of the Can-do?"

What do you suppose the cost of a dirty bomb in NYC or DC will be if the city is contaminated for decades as compared to the cost of a wall or even ten times the number of border agents? The latter will look like a bargain in hind sight.

Not to mention the political price those in power at the time will pay.

I agree with Fred who said it was too expensive to build a wall and would take too long. He added that it would take too many Border Guards.

I am started to like this wall idea. Originally, I figured there is no way to build a wall that long and the costs would be way too high. But actually, it seems quite feasible (from a cost standpoint):

from Parapundit.com -

2004 January 06 Tuesday
Israel West Bank Barrier Fence To Cost $3.5 Million Per Mile

The barrier being constructed between the West Bank and Israel is a wall in some sections and a fence in other sections depending on the perceived security needs in each area. A barrier to keep out trouble is affordable.

Bronfman blamed many of the problems in and around villages like Mas'ha on the security fence. However, a security source intimate with details about the construction of the fence said Monday that the fence will annex only 6 percent of the West Bank on the Israeli side, including the spur that surrounds Ariel. At this stage of construction, said the source, 1.7% of West Bank land is on the Israeli side of the fence.

The source added that so far 200 km. out of the total of 730 km. of the fence has been completed.

Ahmad Maher of Islam Online claims the fence may be as long as 900 km.

The wall will snake some 900 kilometers along the West Bank and leave even larger swathes of its territory on the Israeli side and could cost up to $2.2 million a kilometer.

The $2.2 million per kilometer estimate translates into 3.54 million per mile which agrees with the $3.5 million per mile estimate in an American newspaper.

So far, Israel has built 93 miles of the barrier in the north. When finished, the barrier will cost an estimated $3.5 million per mile.

At $3.5 million per mile the construction of an equivalent barrier on the almost 2000 mile US border with Mexico in order to keep out illegal aliens would cost $7 billion. This also is quite affordable. The potential savings in medical costs alone would pay for the barrier in the first year. Cost reductions in Medicaid expenditures alone would be substantial.

I just got through emailing Fred Barnes.

Funny how these "experts" who rarely get out of D.C. know all about what goes on elsewhere.

I told Barnes that he should do some personal investigative reporting before he opines again on illegal immigration and the problems we face in the border states.

I was glad to here Charles Krauthhammer admit that we need a FENCE on the border. AMEN!

On another subject but something that was said by Ceci Connelly on the same panel. I am tired of people calling the Congressman from GA, Max Cleland a "hero". The clown picked up a live grenade while he was on a "beer run." And any Soldier/Marine knows you DO NOT PICK UP A LIVE GREANDE, YOU HOLLER "GRENADE" AND YOU DIVE FOR COVER! The dumb-ass blew himself up when he picked it up!!
HE WAS NO FRIGGIN' HERO. NEVER WAS AND NEVER WILL BE! PERIOD!

As I've said on Brit threads before, Charles is the real life Dr. Strangelove.

"I agree with Fred who said it was too expensive to build a wall and would take too long"

Do you have ANY IDEA what it is costing just CA alone to allow illegals to stay here????
ANY IDEA?

NINE BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR!
and when you add the other three border states it adds up to FIFTEEN BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR!

I don't know where you live, but I can build you one hellofa wall with NINE BILLION DOLLARS!

We spend billions protecting the borders in S. Korea, Afghanistan & Iraq...we sure as hell can spend whatever it takes to secure our own friggin' borders! PERIOD!
