Mystery Explosion Strikes Downtown San Francisco
(CBS5) SAN FRANCISCO An explosion struck in downtown San Francisco mid-morning Friday at the intersection of Post and Kearny shortly before 10 a.m.
The source of the explosion is not known at this time but a structure is on fire and one person is reported to have been injured.
San Francisco police report the evacuation of several buildings in the area, including the Crocker Galleria. Foot and car traffic has been cleared from the area.
One occupant of the Crocker Galleria building, whose office is on the 8th floor, said that he felt the explosion's impact but sensed it was not an earthquake.
Portions of Sutter, Montgomery, Kearny and Post streets have been closed while investigators proceed through the area.
The Ralph Lauren store at 90 Post Street was damaged. Reportedly, the store's awning was engulfed in flames.
The explosion reportedly dislodged a manhole cover and buckled a section of sidewalk. There is broken glass strewn on the sidewalk.
Well, technically, yes.
It's been a routine occurance in Washington DC the last 5 years ago; I think it's happened about a dozen times. The utility infrastructure is very old and deteriorated in NW DC, and for various reasons including gas leaks, electrical fires, etc. Manhole covers have literally exploded out of the street.
Transformers are typically not located underground...I think.

In New York they electrocute people and dogs!
Thank you for your updates
It just screams out for one-liners. Lololol
Good one.
Maybe you could post a link at the top of the thread to an article about this in the SF Chronicle? Thanks.

LOLOL .. Wifey and I will be there in 3 weeks.. 5 different ports of call .. You have been warned. :)
That way, when Foxnews wants the interview, they'll know who to call.
Sorry in advance for the continued sarcasm.
Because I don't think Hamas would look too kindly upon FR headquarters (located in Fresno, CA).
Yikes!
Thanks for standing up for us. I was always getting the odd eye when I was in the military. Helped put out a fire on an F-15 and was cracking jokes right up until the time when the fire department came up in their entry suits and took the fire extinguisher away from me.
