US software firm Novell (Nasdaq: NOVL) expects to sell 250,000 units of its new Novell Linux Desktop in the next 12 months in Argentina, the first Latin American country where the company has launched the new solution, according to Novell southern region channel and alliances manager Gonzalo Pérez.
"This is the first launching of the product and we expect to expand its coverage to Uruguay within 15-20 days, where we have already tested the products, and to Chile within a month," he added.
Novell Linux Desktop includes Linux operating system and the most recent version of OpenOffice.Org, an office tools package with all basic applications, plus internet connectivity and multimedia capabilities. The product is offered under an alliance with US chip manufacturer Intel (NYSE: INTC).
"With this solution, Novell is offering Linux operating system over machines assembled in Argentina. By paying a lower price for the operating system, we are offering users the chance to use that money on a better PC," Pérez said.
"They say users buy a PC with Linux operating system in order to pay less for the PC but within 48 hours they format the hard drive and install an illegal version of another operating system. Particularly, with this announcement we want to break the 48-hour barrier," he added.
To this end, the company is also offering Novell Linux Desktop technical support by telephone for 90 days, a user's manual in Spanish and e-learning classes on all products installed in the PC.
Novell has shown particular interest in the Linux world, a segment experiencing exponential growth. For the fiscal year ending October 2005, the company expects sales of its open source solutions to grow 70-90%, according to previous reports.
"We started our focus on the Linux segment 3-5 years ago offering multiplatform solutions. Then, Novell acquired Linux solutions providers Simean and Suse. The growth is notorious and there is an entire community giving support to this platform including Novell, IBM and HP," he added.

Hopefully novell is right and this will get the ball rolling on their Linux side, its stock it only slightly higher than it was before it announced the purchase of Suse and is down a good deal from the overreaction of investors shortly after the news.
Novell is filling the biggest gap between Linux and established desktop Operating systems like Windows and OSX.
Check out Linspire.
This had to be at least three years ago when I was still in NY so it may have improved. I guess to people who already really know Linux Linspire does anything but inspire but to the windows user maybe there is something there..
Could have sworn it was Ximian. Have used SuSE since 6.x and Novell doesn't seem to have done anything egregiously wrong. The desktop product, both from SuSE and Novell, is a little light and has been behind even the Personal version. Have preferred the Professional product for completeness.
Novell seems to be trying the RedHat business, frequent open versions, make money on support. It may work.
Yea I caught that, I thought thats how Ximian might be written in spanish..
Figures, an article about an American company selling 250,000 units of its product in a foreign nation and all you do is piss and moan about Linux..
Just asking some questions about who is behind this stuff, since it's widely reported to be the DNC. And Argentina doesn't actually have to pay for any of it, right? No wonder their stock is so low, barely above cash value.
Cant you read? Novell a private American Company is behind selling 250,000 units of its product to a foreign nations. I know you don't care about certain American companies while you ignore copyright violations by others bu usually you wait until much further in a thread to be so transparent..
Yea its the DNC and the Illuminati. They grew Linux in a testube and have embedded mystical lines of code into Linux which renders users communist and anti-American. They are doing it because they want to get embedded Linux into your (specifically you) mp3 player so they can steal your music...
Yeah, I am sure some of the money goes to Red China, too.
God, but you are a tendentious bore.
Knowing their politics by the software they use
There's plenty more, of course. But you already knew that.
I think it's great that Novell was able to do this. I like MS having some competition because they have become very stagnant and maybe this'll shake the cobwebs off of them.
On the other side though, I don't see too many people get excited when Microsoft sells tons of it's software overseas. There aren't too many headnlines about that.
One more point, it says "expects" to sell, that's a far cry for "has already sold".
All things cosidered though, this is a very positive thing for Novell and hopefully it will help push OSS further.
"DAVOS, Switzerland, (AFP) - US software giant Bill Gates has high praise for China, which he says has created a brand-new form of capitalism that benefits consumers more than anything has in the past.
"It is a brand-new form of capitalism, and as a consumer its the best thing that ever happened," Gates told an informal meeting late Friday at the World Economic Forum in this ski resort.
He characterized the Chinese model in terms of "willingness to work hard and not having quite the same medical overhead or legal overhead". "
Yup its a good thing we have Bill Gates to protect us from the Evil Chinese government... oh wait he likes that Government..
LOL!!!
