Rice: Israel's evacuation of the Gaza Strip is only a first step

WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday said that while she feels for evacuated settlers Israel will be expected to make further concessions that would ultimately lead to an independent Palestinian state.
"Everyone empathizes with what the Israelis are facing," Rice said, but added "It cannot be Gaza only."
In an interview published by the New York Times, Rice said that the Palestinian Authority must move quickly to disarm Palestinian factions intent on breaking the current cease-fire with Israel.

The Secretary of State offered sympathy for the settlers who are being evacuated from their homes in Gaza but also made it clear that she expected Israel and the Palestinians to take further steps in short order toward the creation of a Palestinian state.
Such steps would include loosening travel restrictions in the West Bank and withdrawing from more Palestinian cities.

Are you kidding about loving O'Really? He's refused to touch this story all week. I do watch him though... as Bill Maher said on his show last night, it moves along at a clip that never seems to bore. But I'm angry that he has embargoed Able Danger and the Israeli pogrom against its own people.

We are fighting Islamic terrorists yet our government is afraid to even name them for what their are.
The U.S. State Department is a collection of stool pigeons, political hacks with no brains, and beaurocratic sell-outs who have adopted an unhealthy affinity for the nations in which they serve, instead of maintaining any loyalty to the U.S They are a nest of vipers which should be cleaned out totally and replaced by patriotic Americans who recognize where their primary loyalties lie.

I can't think of a respected US military or political leader during a time of war who has ever eschewed the Bible.(Washington, Lincoln, Lee, Sherman, Teddy, Patton, Marshall, etc)
And given the mortal and centuries old enemy we are again facing, why should we disdain our historical precdence now?
Do you know of a better source of guidance for our leaders in a time of peril than God?

My main issue with the 'roadmap to peace' and a confusion why evangelicals would support Bush knowing this would be the eventual outcome of 'conservative' foreign policy as it relates to Israel.

i feel betrayed often....and taken for granted.
For one thing, you'll find that none of the nations in the world today bears any resemblance to what was commonly understood as a nation back in Old Testament times. In fact, the basic structure of a modern elected government is utterly incompatible with a Biblical concept of a nation/state. If you read the entire Bible from cover to cover, you'll find that a totalitarian government was the normal state of existence for the entire period of time that it covers.

The Bible is the bedrock of Western Civilization and you might note that where Juedo-Christian culture exists that those cultures generally flourish as opposed to others.

I think you may be referring to his status as an "unindicted criminal".
I wasn't attempting to judge the policy myself. Merely making the observation that she agrees with or is neutral to the Presidents policy.Fair enough. But considering how central the "road map" has been to his foreign policy objectives, I doubt she would have gotten the job if she didn't herself support it.

What has happened is that theh Saudi's told Bush, give the Pail's victories or we will give you an oil price induced recession.
Remember what happened after Nixon resupplied the Israeli's in the Yom Kippur War? The Saudi retaliation was the Oil Embargo.
Suggested cure: Link financial war to real war. If the price of oil is used as a weapon, neutron bomb the Saudi and Iranian oil fields and then take them over. Permanently.
Great -- so what does that have to do with U.S. foreign policy today? What does "Judaeo-Christian culture" have to say about the Middle East, U.S. domestic policy, etc.?
It's no mere accident that the words "United States of America" are nowhere to be found in the Bible.
That's true, but the State Dept. frames the policy for the public. To come out now, at this moment, and put the onus on Israel in this manner, is bizarre. But Mother Condi has had a tin ear since she took the job as Sec. of State.
I don't blame her for that, I blame the President. Once Condi became Secretary of State, she adopted the policies of the administration regardless of her opinions on them.
As you say, the State Department frames the policy for the public. But the State Department doesn't set the policies. It's her job to advise the President and then, once he has made a decision, to represent his decision out in the world.
Unless you think this issue is worth her resignation and public repudiation of the President, I don't know what else you would expect her to do.

A mainly Christian populace who know the right thing and a strong Jewish lobby that shares that. Both are rooted in the Bible and those traditions to varying degrees. To deny that is ignorance or the wishful thinking of an atheist.
Gas prices here are about refinery capacities more than overseas supply.
I fear this is the beginning of the end. The stage is set. How in the world does anyone think we can trust the Palestinians? They have broken every treaty and promise. They have been given the perfect staging area to attack Israel.
Even though few ever lived at least in California. Californios were SPANISH. A few Mexicans of indio extraction came for the Gold Rush but most left soon after for the more genteel environs of Mexico.
