Did bad heroin kill two coeds?
New York Daily News and lastnightsparty.com ^ | 8/16/05 | AUSTIN FENNER, ADAM LISBERG and ROBERT F. MOORE

Two college coeds used cocaine with a pair of convicted drug dealers and had fresh needle marks on their arms when they overdosed in a lower East Side apartment, sources said yesterday.

Police believe a bad batch of heroin may have contributed to the deaths of Mellie Carballo and Maria Pesantez, both 18 and with promising futures.

It was unclear who supplied the drugs, but heartbroken relatives of the victims blamed Roberto Martinez, 41, and Alfredo (Tito) Morales, 33, who were with the teens Friday when the students apparently overdosed.

"How is it possible that they are free?" asked distraught father Juan Carlos Pesantez outside the family's home in Jackson Heights, Queens. "With those [criminal] records? With two girls dead?"

Carballo, a second-semester student at Hunter College, and Pesantez, an NYU sophomore, were found about 6 p.m. Friday in an apartment at 484 E. Houston St. Carballo died 20 minutes later and Pesantez died Sunday.

The men admitted doing cocaine with the women, who met at St. Vincent Ferrer High School in Manhattan, a law enforcement source said.

Martinez, who placed a bouquet of red roses in front of the E. Houston St. apartment yesterday, told a different story to the Daily News. He said he came to the apartment, where Morales lives, after Morales called him in a panic.

"I saw [Pesantez] in the bedroom catching a seizure," Martinez said yesterday. "I tried to give her mouth-to-mouth and then I called 911."

Martinez said he met Carballo at a bar about a month ago and didn't meet Pesantez until Friday. He denied giving the women drugs, saying they brought drugs to Morales' apartment.

No one has been arrested and toxicology results are pending.

Morales was convicted in 1995 of possession of cocaine with intent to sell. Martinez, whose is on parole, has 13 narcotics arrests.

The coeds' friends told cops the women wanted to try heroin, a police source said. The friends also told police that Carballo, a former MTV intern, and Pesantez, a pianist and National Honor Society member, had done drugs before.

Relatives dispute that account.

"To my knowledge, she had never experimented with anything," said Celeste Carballo, 21, who shared a room with her sister at the family's West Side apartment.

I would suggest Know Your Rights would visit a couple of ghettos to see what bottom looks like.

I'm sure I'd see plenty of druggies and alkies. What would that prove? That drugs and alcohol should be banned?

You started the religous aspect.

And you continued the discussion ... which made it the topic. Shame you don't really have anything to say on the subject ... or any other.

.You're kind of a bitter guy, aren't you?

Yeah, I really can't get into expressing glee over the death of young girls. I am kind of weird that way.

They killed themselves in an act of depravity. Not something to really feel bad over.

I feel worse about their death than I would about yours.

The users? Are you accusing Know Your Rights, or anyone else on this thread as engaged in illegal behavior? Quite possibly libel. Certainly libel, if you happen to be referring to me: I not a drug user, pot included.

Methanol deaths went up during Prohibition 1. Prohibitionists were partially culpable for those deaths. The present situation is no different.

The dose a habitual heroin user routine takes, will kill a first time user.

The dose a habitual alcoholic user routinely takes, will kill a first time user too. There are many examples of college freshmen pledges who died from ingesting a bottle of scotch or vodka... merely enough for an alcoholic to get warmed up.

Similarly, there is a lab experiment in habituation of toxic substances: Get two dogs of equal size, give one one drop of pure nicotine, the other two. The one that gets one lives, the one that gets two dies. On the next day, give the first dog two drops of pure nicotine. He lives - because he was habituated to nicotine with a non-fatal dose on the previous day; two drops is now no longer lethal.

"They deserved to die and their deaths mocked"

Not entirely true. I never mocked their deaths. As for the first part..."deserved to die"....you put the pistol to your head and pull the trigger, I am not cryin' for ya.

Since drug criminalization is failing in all the ways that alcohol criminalization failed, your asssumption that cultural embedding makes a difference stands unsupported by the evidence.

No. Alcohol use has been rampant in western societies for centuries. MJ, cocaine, meth and heroin have been unknown or underground for that same period of time. When alcohol was criminalized, it was done in a society in which 75-85% of the adult population were drinkers. It's shortcomings were much more spectacular than the WOD. Imagine trying to criminalize heroin if 80% of the adult population were regular users. That's the right comparison.

You've never broken any laws whatsoever in your entire life? Neither my answer to your question nor your answer to this one has any bearing on the subjects being debated on this thread. I could be a lily-white saint or a recovering addict in rehab, and in neither case does it change the validity of my arguments.* However, you seem to be on a fishing expedition for an attack-the-messenger logical fallacy, instead of addressing my points. Sorry, but I have no use for that.

*Unless of course you are the sort of totalitarian who thinks that ThoughtCrimes ought to be on the books, such that if someone presents "unacceptable" attitudes or opinions, they should be re-educated into the path of virtue and righteousness - as defined by yourself, naturally.

"the truth" is an absolute defense against libel.

So, since you refuse to be honest with me, you've made yourself a laughing stock.

I asked you a simple question. You refuse to answer. Don't accuse people of libel when they speak the truth.
