I've actually been to Del Rio. I seem to remember the river being a little wider there than at Brownsville. I also remember that the river didn't exactly look like it had the best water for swimming, thanks to pollution and flies.

The Rio Grande flows slow and shallow by the vegas (meadows) unless water is being released from the lake for irrigation. Cane breaks line the south side of thr river and provide excellent hiding places year around. During a low water period, the water probably isn't waist deep.
