We seem to be watching a horror show of too thin Hollywood actresses. Or at least that would be the observation of anyone who even skims the tabloids, talk shows or People Magazine...

1) The author is quite right about the misplaced worry about excessive thinness in role models. I rent rooms to college students from my alma mater, and every year campus literature pops up about "eating disorders awareness week" and "how to spot signs of eating disorders in yourself or your friends" and "how to get help in dealing with an eating disorder". The detailed info in this literature always makes absolutely clear that "eating disorder" is defined as efforts to be thinner or not get fatter, and that full blown anorexia and bulimia are just the extreme cases, and that milder "symptoms" are cause for concern. I always point out to the students that the number one eating disorder in this country is habitual or compulsive OVEReating, and that several times as many of their classmates will die prematurely from the results of overeating, than from any form of undereating or habitual vomiting. This is always a startling new concept to them.
Most of the alarmist psycho-babble about "eating disorders" is driven by leftist-feminist activists whose real aim is to eliminate any traditional norms about weight and self-discipline in general. As a public health issue, the incidence of death and serious injury from anorexia and bulimia is on a par with deaths and serious injuries from getting hit by lighting, but you'd never know it from all the hype about "eating disorders".
2) I'm convinced that a lot of cases of serious anorexia and bulimia are caused, not by glamorous images of skinny TV stars and models, but by the huge hordes of seriously overweight people that we're all surrounded by. Anorexia and bulimia are IMO overreactions by immature young people to a very reasonable fear that their own weight will get totally out of control, just as has obviously happened to so many people they see every day.
The reason that these overreactions occur overwhelmingly girls, is because girls who were of healthy weight as children naturally start gaining some weight and new curves during the age range where anorexia and bulimia usually start, and this horonally driven process can easily cause a sense of losing control over one's body.
I think she looks really hot in that pic. Is there somethin' wrong with me? :o)
Depends on how well you procreate. :o)
Well darlin',
it wasn't on your list ;)
And in the woman's world of the 'perfect' male, total devotion and loyalty is number one (followed closely by ripped abs, long hair and....nevermind...I'm going to take my short-stubby, Ishouldabeenkilledbythesabertooth legs on a walk)
Progressive degradation.
lol
I prefer dinosaur. :-)
Pffft. Women can never make up their minds. ;o)
These stats do it for me:

BUSH EXERCISES 6X A WEEK; 'MOST-FIT' PRESIDENT IN HISTORY
President Bush turned 59 years old this month and his health is in the "superior" fitness category for men his age -- greater than 99% percentile for 55-59 year-old men!
The latest health results make Bush the "most-fit" president in modern history.
He has not had a sick day in the past year -- and he works out 6 days a week: Workouts include bicycling (15-20 miles, 15-18mph), treadmill (low impact "hill-work"), elliptical trainer, free weight resistance training, and stretching.
The President takes a daily multi-vitamin, low-dose aspirin, glucosamine/chondroitin, and an omega 3 supplement.
Bush Weight: 191 pounds(last year 199)
Body Composition: Body fat 15.79% (last year 18.25%; normal for age 16.5-20.5%)
Resting heart rate (seated): 47 bpm
Resting blood pressure (seated): 110/64
Uncompensated (uncorrected) distant visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. Corrected near visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes (the President uses reading glasses as needed).
i guess we both have the same problem then... 8^)
she's still a 10 there compaired to what's left of her now... 8^(
No nothings wrong with you, it seems that I am the oddball. The good thing is if that picture appeals to you then we can split'em up. You can get the big girls and I'll intercept the ones being rushed to the clinic.
Who's that guy, Michael something-Italian-sounding who does that show on entertaining? He's not bad at all and is healthy-looking too. Looks like he enjoys his good food in moderation and he exercises. My kinda guy.
FYI, I watch the food network in the mornings while I run on the treadmill. I'm a huge Rachel Ray fan. I can't stand that Sanda Lee woman though. Everything she makes is processed, fatty crap, and her speech patterns are so bizarre. She stresses all the wrong words in each sentence, and she's condescending.
Yes. King Canute had more effect on the tide than the grammar police will ever have on FreeRepublic. I expect more of a professional writer and her editor, though.
my bad...
We don't know that she didn't try other routes first, without success, before resorting to surgery. And statistically, gastric bypass has a very small death rate. I still don't think it's a great idea for most obese people, but often makes medical sense, when obesity has reached a level where it poses a pretty immediate threat to survival, and also poses a huge obstacle to the exercise which is really needed to maintain cardiovascular fitness and to lose weight.
How do I post these pictures on Freerepublic?
The freeper that died had posted a current pic on her homepage and she didn't look anywhere near big enough for a bypass. She looked pretty normal to me.
Are you talking about the guy with the accent who comes on the show with a female either right before or after Paula's Kitchen? He's pretty sexy, accent and all.
Just watch it on those chips during your wait. Those things are a killer.
