So if you can believe this study, it defines Middle America--whatever's not on either list.

"These liberal white communities, however, are more reminiscent of penguins clustering together around a shrinking iceberg than of a vibrant and growing political movement."

The mental picture this creates is great. Think I'm going to refer to white liberals as "penguins" from now on.

I wonder what the criteria was for this. Certainly, ifi they define liberal as democrat, it would be that way but if they are talking about gay issues, abortion and stuff, I would think blacks would be very conservative.

This list has been posted many times to Free Republic. Here are some FAQs:

1. Why are Detroit and Gary so much higher than liberal capitals like Boston and San Francisco?

A. This list is determined by the percentage of the population voting Democrat in recent elections. What this means in practice is that it correlates heavily with the African-American population in the city. This means that cities which are not widely considered liberal will be ranked high on this list because their citizens voter overwhelmingly for Democrats. Similarly, many cities with a liberal reputation but which include neighborhoods of semi-conservative ethnic voters will be further down than you expect.

2. Where are the liberal hotspots like Ithaca, Madison, Newton, or Athens?

A. Cities must have a population of at least 100,000 to make the list. Many university towns and liberals oases do not qualify.

3. So this list sounds a little bit like Barbra Streisand as a reflection of liberalism.

A. Yep.

Not a great breakdown. Since they required a pop of 100k or more, Ithaca missed serious consideration. Those of us in Fox holes behind enermy lines know that Gary, IN cannot hold a candle to us. After all we regularly mobilize busloads of nothing better to do protesters to go anywhere President Bush travels. Besides, we have the yellow bug (painted with kid's toys no less) police chief car as well. So we would be competitive to make not only the ultra liberal list but also the just plain weird list as well.

Had they not used a high population number, Arcata Calif would have been #1 Liberal City as 4 of the council members are Green party. They passed a Nuclear Free Zone, Peace Sanctuary, supports the terrorist in Nicaragua and told the President to get out of Iraq.

Hard to believe. Everytime I venture into West Valley City, all I see are the tattooed and the pierced, in the hundreds. It's a scary place.

They are not really measuring conservatism vs. liberalism, but Democrat voters vs. Republican voters.
