Mom at Bush ranch decries spectacle (I guess she didn't say all those things she said)
Dallas Morning News ^ | August 16, 2005 | G. ROBERT HILLMAN

CRAWFORD, Texas – Bothered by what she laments as mounting "distractions," Cindy Sheehan sought Monday to refocus her peace vigil near President Bush's ranch on her central anti-war message.

Since she "came out here and sat down on a lawn chair" 10 days ago, Ms. Sheehan said, the situation has "got out of hand and just turned into a media circus."

For instance, she cited calls for the president's impeachment as "another distraction off of our original cause."

On Sunday, she faced reports that she was not paying her federal income taxes. "They killed my son in an illegal and immoral war," she told a reporter who asked, "and I don't feel like I owe them anything."

And she's been besieged not only by burgeoning numbers of her own supporters, with all sorts of agendas of their own, but also by counterdemonstrators over the weekend – and on Sunday by an angry neighbor who fired a shotgun into the air near her camp.

"The media attention has been fabulous," she said Monday at a news conference to introduce other military families opposing the war in Iraq. "We have finally gotten this war back on the front page and back in the headline news where it belongs."

Still, she said, she had stayed awake all night reviewing recent events and wishes now to get back to the basics of her vigil – and her demand to meet with the president.

"I don't want to be distracted," she said. "Our message is to bring the troops home."

........She and other families met with the president at Fort Lewis, Wash., a few months after her son died. But she has been demanding a second meeting to confront Mr. Bush on the war.

You got me... I never saw the movie. I imagine he "got what he wanted" from her or she wouldn't have been in "the movie".

"I see the statement on "refocusing" her efforts as a subtle acknowledgement (probably by the handlers who tell her what to say, since I doubt she's got a very good sense of perspective) that she is not resonating with the rest of the country. People know that something is a little "off."

This is exaclty how I read it. I anticipated her handlers would tell her to make this move, for exactly the reason you stated.

With all the crazy things that she's said, have you once seen a quote in which she talks about her love for her son? I haven't.

Me either. I expect she's very conflicted about her son's death. His volunteering for the Army (twice) was a rejection of her most strongly held convictions. It would be (relatively) like one of my sons rejecting our faith and becoming an abortionist, I imagine.

I think you're right that whoever is directing her has noticed that the message is not longer playing well with the public. (Think the FReep helped? :-). These people seem to think that their ravings aren't being seen or heard by anyone other than their own True Believers; we're shocked, shocked to find the anti-Israel rant in general distribution! They just don't get the free speech thing at all.

I started wondering last night about exactly when and how the liberals became so anti-Semitic. Whenever it happened, it was much before my time.

Same here. My reading suggests that it's universal - all evil people hate Jews. Which is not to say that they hate only Jews, but it seems to be the most common element.

I see the statement on "refocusing" her efforts as a subtle acknowledgement (probably by the handlers who tell her what to say, since I doubt she's got a very good sense of perspective) that she is not resonating with the rest of the country.

It is so cynical.

You cannot simultaneously be sincere and speaking from the heart and still be able to repackage your message. Clearly her handlers are telling her to lay off the red meat anti-Israel and anti-American stuff, because she is offending the non-lunatic wing of the Democrat Party (in as much as it exists).

But if this is what she truly believes, she should shout it from the rooftops. Otherwise, she reveals herself to be a manipulative dissembler, who is just out for her own agenda, who is exploiting the death of her son in a most repugnant manner.

She's giving aid and comfort to those who would kill our troops.

To say nothing of denigrating her son's service.

Way way back when billandhil were in college they were supporting the PLO. If you recall, they were then, and continued to be violent terrorists.

Evidently the loss of jewish life meant nothing to billandhil.

The quote-unquote election, huh?! They will never allow a Republican to win again without finding some way to negate it in their looney minds.
Meantime up here in WA state we have a quote-unquote governor...for real! They took stealing elections to a whole new level even for Democrats in the great North West this past year!
Cindy Sheehan is a disgrace to centuries of truly grieving relatives of war heroes lost. And this story will end soon and I hope she doesn't go completely insane when it does.

Our government is run by one party, every level," Sheehan continued, "and the mainstream media is a propaganda tool for the government."

"The media attention has been fabulous," she said Monday ...

I actually feel sorry for this woman, if indeed she is as I suspect, confused, hurt, disoriented, and being manipulated by those who will use her as long and hard as they can.

When they are done working her like a rented mule her son will still be dead, her husband her husband no more, and she will be left destitute, a marginal player in someone else's game. If, that is, she is actually venting her grief as anger.

Otherwise, she is exploiting her son's death for fame, such as it is, and in doing so, she soils his memory and demoralizes his comrades at arms. If that were the case, my pity would become contempt. Perhaps her ex-husband-to-be knows her better.

I wonder what this ugly crow will do when September 11th rolls around? You think there will be any media coverage that day? I doubt it.

I saw it, and admit that I did not want to watch, but for the sake of being able to argue and/or discuss, I watched. My boyfriend purchased it for 99 cents on HBO b4 the election. We also bought FahrenHype 911 b4 the election. The woman in the movie that you are referring to is MUCH like Cindy Sheehan. Crying and blubbering all over the place for her lost son. Demanding why the President's daughters are not in Iraq. There are also scenes of MM asking senators why their children are not sent to Iraq. The whole argument is pointless, as we have a volunteer force. Read or listen to this great Rush rant on this exact subject. I believe someone already posted it yesterday.
