League City City Council (Votes to Deny Street-side Newspaper Sales)

League City City Council has scheduled an executive session for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16 to consult with the city attorney regarding pending litigation against the city by the Houston Chronicle and the Galveston County Daily News.

At this week's regular meeting, the city council voted 5-1, with Jim Nelson opposed, to deny a request from the two newspapers for a variance from the city code restricting the solicitation and sale of materials to occupants of motor vehicles stopped on public roadways.

This is one way to hit the lamestream press in the pocketbook. Of course they tend to have a fleet of lawyers to fight back.

What if every town and city refused to allow these papers to sell papers in the street?

I think the League City Council was trying to enforce the litter ordinance by keeping garbage like the Daily Rag and the Houston Comical off the streets. Kudos League City.

As a resident and homeowner in League City - I say bravo - let them sue and see who wins - as it is more often than not the Chronicle throws their paper for free - just to try and argue to the ad companies that circulation is up rather than in the toilet...

Haven't seen a paperboy in League City - ever.

The Houston Comical gives local bums a stack of papers and sets them loose on the local citizenry to intimidate them into buying there lousy paper that no one subscribes to.

I can't set up my movable yard sale, wearing a bikini, at a busy intersection either.
I have a feeling freedom and liberty in the USA is not threatened by my inability to do so...

Well I am a little shamed to admitt it, but eons ago, before I entered my chosen carrier path, I was one of the guys that put the bums and winos on the street corners that would sell the Houston Comical in Galveston County County (and yes in League City). Twas an intersting time recruiting the bums from Houston and putting them around selling the papers. It was a weekend gig doing it, but it paid for college and the police academy. I hope all the local towns ban those sellers, thieves and drunks selling left wing editorials and personals in your neighborhood for $1.50 each.

So the Constitutional Right to speak your political opinion without fear Government retaliation is the same as having the right to sale the news-rags wherever they want to? Wow, I wish I was as smart as that Liberal Lawyer so I could understand that concept.

Not to mention the public safety issue of having staggering individuals stand in a narrow (3' max) median trying to sell newspapers to drivers that would rather swerve past them than be accosted while they drive to work (sipping coffee, applying make up, etc.)

What is really outrageous are the charities (legitimate or not) that put kids out in those same medians and feeder turnaround islands hustling change.
