Our fleet is dwindling and many such as Rumsfeld feel that we need a sleeker more agile military. and I do think there is merit to the arguement.
However I would not discount any threat from china
Nimitz class: Nimitz, Eisenhower (on RCOH status right now, though), Vinson, Roosevelt, Lincoln, Washington, Stennis, Truman, Ronald Reagan. The USS George H. W. Bush is building in the yards with a 2008 delivery date.
Kennedy class: USS John F. Kennedy
Enterprise class: USS Enterprise.
I *think* the USS Kitty Hawk (name ship of the class) is still in service (permanent forward deployment in Japan), while Constellation (of the same class) has been decommissioned.

What do you mean by "active"? If you mean in commission, the number would be 12. If you mean able to leave the dock within a month, the number is much smaller.
Nimitz, Vinson, Roosevelt, Lincoln, Washington, Stennis, Truman, Reagan, Kennedy, Enterprise, and Kitty Hawk are probably the 11 you are asking about. Eisenhower is in refueling and overhaul. Kennedy has been targeted for early retirement.
Kitty Hawk, Nimitz and Reagan are the only 3 underway.
