I am no fan of Jimmy Carter, in fact, the first vote I ever cast was for Ronald Reagan. However, I can understand why the Navy chose to honor him with a namesake boat. Jimmy Carter was the only US President to have been "Qualified in Submarines", and that is a big deal in my book. In addition, he was an active member of the Navy Nuclear Power program from the beginning and he relied on his knowledge and training in this area during the Three Mile Island crisis. His position brought prominence, recognition, and funding to the Submarine community, and this is the Navy's way of recognizing that part of his life.
If I was assigned to the USS Jimmy Carter, I would do as I expect every Sailor on board her to do, serve with pride and honor, quietly bear the jokes with good natured humor, and work hard to make the Jimmy Carter the best boat in the fleet.

For Mrs. Carter, the boat's sponsor, it was her first submarine dive.

Well, Jimmy's smiling now...

but this time it was in a new nuclear vessel bearing his name.

I believe it's "nucular" to Jimmy Carter, as well. But in his case, it's quaint.

Naming a military vessel after Jimmy Carter is like naming a new car factory after Ralph Nader.

We have a sub named "The Appeaser"? I think that's a bad idea.

The USS Jimmy Carter is the most heavily armed submarine ever built

Jimmah plans to use it to rescue the hostages, he's going to drive it right up to the embassy. Don't tell him it was a long time ago or that it can't be used on land, it confuses poor old Jimmah.

Why, In the Name of God, do they keep rewarding these old fools for dirty deeds, after Glenn played a major hindrance and obstructer in Senate hearing's he gets a joy ride into space, then Carter blasts his own country from abroad and HE gets a submarine named after him.

I don't even dare to think what they have planned for Clinton

"The Reagans make us feel okay with our prejudices."
-->Roselyn Carter,election year,1984

I'll never forget that vicious comment by the smug Carters.

They say the anchor is a reproduction of Carter's front teeth.

I wonder what kind of bonus they are giving the crew to get them to serve on this fiasco?

i really find it tasteless to bash the former president and say things about the navy to be disrespectful. Keep ones snide comments to oneself. Some of us happen to think that boat is one of the best in the fleet. yes, my husband is one there but little remarks like they should sink it can be kept to oneself. grow up, can't you just be proud that their are men, and women out there willing to leave their families to protect your country to give you the freedoms you all need and want? I don't appreciate president bashing or bashing the name of a submarine because your personal dislike of someone/something.

"Former President Jimmy Carter today completed his first submarine dive since he left the Navy in 1953"

I remember he went aboard a nuclear sub with Admiral Rickover right after he was inaugurated in 1977. They didn't dive the boat?
