OMAHA, Neb. Ameritrade executive Pete Ricketts (search), describing himself as anti-abortion conservative, launched an election campaign Saturday to unseat U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson (search), the only Democrat in Nebraska's congressional delegation.
"I grew up with great values and tremendous opportunities," said Ricketts, Ameritrade's chief operating officer and son of its founder. "I want my three kids and other's people's children to have the same opportunities that I had."
Ricketts, 40, faces two other candidates in the Republican primary: former Nebraska Attorney General Don Stenberg (search) and former state GOP chairman David Kramer (search).
Nelson is up for re-election to a second term next year.
"I'm a conservative Republican," Ricketts said Saturday. "We need to support President Bush's agenda. ... We have to have a culture that respects life, that respects the unborn."
He also said that Social Security (search) should be modernized, and that private investment accounts proposed by the Bush administration "can be part of the solution."
However, he said, "I don't think they are the only solution."
Ricketts will leave his post at the Omaha-based online brokerage firm effective Aug. 26, but he will continue to serve as vice chairman and a member of Ameritrade's board of directors. His father, Joe Ricketts, is the company's founder and chairman, and the family is a big contributor to the

Election Season is coming, and I can't wait for 2006!
Indeed
Is it possible that Don Stenberg and Kerry Winterer will drop out?
I dont believe Winterer has official jumped in yet has she?
Bye bye nelly!
Whoops, I was thinking of David Kramer. My mistake. Hopefully, he and the bland, uninspiring Don Stenberg will drop out.
I'd rather see him run in the primary against "Chuck" ("It's a verb") Hagel, then send that tepid pantywaist to the unemployment line.
Now Nebraska should deal with it's other liberal senator. the republican Chuck Hagel
Primary Challenge, Nebraska is so conservative that a primary challenge to replace Hagel wouldn't risk much.
Pete Ricketts (at least his commercials are different)
Kramer has been known to talk tough about Immigration though.
Nelson better take extra vitamin C or Nebraska will surely get Ricketts.
Senator Hagel is actually quite wealthy in his own right and one of the richest republican senators.
If he so desired (and he doesn't), he could self finance his own campaigns at will.
Don Stenberg is a real conservative, but he has lost this race twice already. I don't see it getting any better this time.
I don't know much about Ricketts. Newer pictures show him with a shaved head, ala Lex Luthor. He comes across (at least so far) as a spoiled kid with a rich father.
I don't know much about Kramer except he is one of the talking heads that runs the Convention Center. It hasn't broke even and probably won't ever. We owe everyone because of it. Not a good track record.
Someone once said that a real winner gets to choose his opponents. Looks like Nelson has chosen these three. Unless they change their tactics an awful lot, Nelson may be back for 6 more years.
Whats the situation with RNC person Kerry Winterer of Omaha, and State AG Jon Bruning? And are Congressman Osbourne and Fmr Governor Johanns definatly out?
Osbourne is running for Governor, and there is absolutly no chance whatsoever that he will lose.
He is the next governor, whomever gets the nomination against Nelson would be wise to kiss up to Osbourne and campaign with him all over the state.
Johanns shows no signs of even wanting to run and the current governor is going to commit career suicide by trying to stop Osbourne and keep his job as governor.
