SHOTS FIRED! (Property owner reported to have fired gun in air near Camp Cindy)
Lone Star Iconoclast ^ | 10:15am (Central) August 14, 2005 | Deborah Mathews - reporting for The Iconoclast

Camp Casey is becoming very organized, with how-to signs placed about. Ann Wright said, "That's what we are trying to do."

Let me read you the schedule posted on a tree: "9:15 camp meeting; 10 a.m. inter-faith service, 10:30 a.m., "Food-Not-Bombs Breakfast at Peace House," and....

"Wait! Someone is firing a gun. (pause). He fired it into the air about five times. He appears to be a local inside the fence line on private property. Now he has thrown what looks like a shotgun into the front seat of a pickup, and he's stomping off out of sight. I wonder where he went.

"Now he's coming back out. I'm out here standing on the road. He's got a no parking sign in his hand, walking toward his fence. I'm going to go try to talk to him. I've got to hang up."

(three minutes later)

I went over and talked to the man. He is Larry Mattlage, who says he is on his property and just posted a no-parking sign.

"We're going to start doing our war and it's going to be underneath the law," he told me. "Whatever it takes. So y'all go find another place to do whatever you do. 'Cause this is our front yard and back yard."

I asked, "Do you mean the protestors?"

Wait.....now there's some Secret Service and cops. I'm going to get closer to hear what they're saying. People in bullet-proof vests are here now. Two Secret Service agents are now walking up his driveway towards his house, with Mr. Mattlage. A member of the Sheriff's Department has arrived. Mr. Mattlage is waving his arms now. All of them are now walking back this way.

Now they are between the lane and the house. He's at the fence now. Let me record what they are saying. I'll call right back.

Yea, we had about 50 M-14s and about 20 .22s. I have a coworker who had a live working M-60 in his JROTC.

Now I hear they cannot even practice with properly shaped wooden rifles in some places. Sigh.

We seem to be raising a nation of wussies addicted to "Duke Nukem" and "Captain Planet".

Got a sign at my drive (proprty line) that says:

IF YOU CAN READ THIS, YOU'RE IN RANGE!

Stops 'em every time.

Yes, I live kinda in the boonies, better not try this if you have a sidewalk in front of your home.

Shoddy, Shoddy work. I'll call you right back was 2 hours ago.

LOL.... well they aren't exactly the NYT. I suspect the gal is running to and fro and not sure what is going on.

Sounds to me like a good ol' boy got in his pickup, drove across a few of his acres to the road, took his gun and fired a few rounds off on his property.

Cindy Sheehan said it was okay if the man fired his gun on his own property, so long as the bullets remained on his property as well.

Well, how authoritative of her!

Great idea! Spread some manure on the fields adjoining Camp Cindy. How can the "peaceniks" object to that; it's organic/natural.

I hope some of the Crawford locals are lurking on FR.

Three words Mr. Mattlage, liquid hog manure. Find a source and spray it on the protestors.
The smell can be intense but it wouldn't hurt anyone. Also the plant life would benefit afterwords.

From their story at the E/P

....Interviewed afterward, protest leader Cindy Sheehan said it was okay if the man fired his gun on his own property, so long as the bullets remained on his property as well.....

I can't understand where this gathering is taking place. Is it on someone's private property,a roadside park or what? and why so close to pres. ranch seems like that would breach some security protocol. Most property in this state is privately owned.P.S sorry i couldn't make it to the freep, sounds like I'm missing all the fun!

Having experienced fire ants while living in Corpus Christi, I can only delight in your report.

They are lucky the protesters stayed in the ditch. It is still frowned upon to cross fences in this state.

It's not hot here, Texas is just a warm-up stop for the troops going to Iraq. ;)

I spoke Mr. Mattlage a few minutes ago. He said he had spoken with the Secret Service and "everything is fine."

He said the community is getting frustrated with the disruption to their everyday lives. He says the community feels the protesters have made their point and they're hoping the situation gets resolved soon so they can get back to ranching and farming. They are also concerned that school buses and ambulances be able to make their rounds without incident.

He says their concern is not about the politics of the demonstration, just that it is getting to be too much for the community.

Cyber-shooters. . .and even THAT is under attack. . .all those wussies want are pillow tosses (not "fights". . .too violent).

On the 9-11 1-yr anniversary, a Stafford County School held a paper-folding exercise. . .somehow this exercise was to mirror some story about paper doves folded by some little girl surviver of Hiroshima, and the school wanted kids to adopt non-violent protest by making doves out of paper. . .a middle east defense attache read about this and told me, as he laughed, that "the US is under attack and you teach your children how to fold paper!?"

A Texan fired a gun on his own property?,

How dare he do that. Just who does he think he is? /dripping with more extreme sarcasm

This article is a load. They don't even state if the shots were fired anywhere near them. He could have been doing target practice or shooting snakes. If these bungholes weren't around, would anyone even report the shooting? No. The world doesn't stop just because they show up.

and why so close to pres. ranch

It's my understanding that their little camp is two or three miles from the ranch; from what I've seen on television, it's set up along the road, outside of property owners' fencing.

A shotgun really isnt that big of a deal.
Very limited range and for all we know he might have been shooting rattlesnakes, reptile variety.

They make enough noise to make folks nervous tho
