A conservative group's test-marketing of the power of the anti-pay-raise message against entrenched legislative leaders is starting at the top: radio ads attacking Senate President Pro Tem Robert Jubelirer, R-Blair, as "Bob Jubelirer, raising our taxes and his salary since 1975," will start airing Aug. 15 in the lawmaker's district.
And a billboard will go up on I-70 near Altoona in the next 10 days showing Jubelirer's face and the words "Sen. Jubelirer voted to raise his own pay to $145,463. A 34% increase. Bigger pay for bigger government. InformedPA.com ."

The anti-Jubelirer billboard and the radio ads are part of a muscle-flexing campaign of the newly-expanding Young Conservatives of Pennsylvania. That group, which began when they were "inspired by" conservative U.S. Senate candidate Pat Toomey's 2004 primary challenge to U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., is now targeting more of the GOP power establishment in Pennsylvania.

The Young Conservatives' anti-pay-raise website, "InformedPA.com," makes the test-marketing nature of this campaign clear. While Jubelirer is their first target, the website invites viewers to look at potential billboards targeting Senate Majority Leader David J. Brightbill, R-Lebanon, Senate Minority Leader Robert Mellow, D-Lackawanna, Sen. Noah Wenger, R-Lancaster and House Minority Leader H. William DeWeese.

"All we're really doing it trying to educate the public, One of the problems we have in this state is that we really don't have strong conservative leadership, we don't have anyone standing up, cutting the budget, cutting spending, saying no pay raises after midnight," said Chris Lilik, a young Duquesne Law School grad and Scranton native who heads the Young Conservatives of Pennsylvania. "We want to send a message that Pennsylvania can do better."
