OAK RIDGE, TN, United States (UPI) -- U.S. grocery stores, schools, hotels and hospitals are likely candidates for a high-efficiency system that provides heating, cooling and electric power.
The PureComfort system -- developed through a partnership between Oak Ridge National Laboratory and United Technologies Research Center -- features a combination of 60-kilowatt microturbines and a new direct exhaust-fired double-effect absorption chiller-heater that recycles exhaust streams.
The system provides simultaneous electric power and cooling. Bob DeVault of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory`s Engineering Science and Technology Division said the system could be configured to provide emergency backup power to the customer in case of an electric outage.
Optionally, PureComfort could provide heating, regenerate a desiccant -- for humidity control -- and provide coolant to a supermarket refrigeration system. The combination of multiple simultaneous electric and thermal outputs enables the system to achieve an overall fuel efficiency of more than 80 percent -- compared to the 33 percent typical of a central power plant.

Most of Oak Ridge's efforts go into other uses for energy and allied researchI'm very glad you posted this article. This technology looks like a step in the right direction and I hope to see it spread.

What is the source in a supermarket?
(Cogeneration Article)
Absorption cooling may be worth considering if your site requires cooling, and if at least one of the following applies:
You have a combined heat and power CHP) unit and cannot use all of the available heat, or if you are considering a new CHP plant
Waste heat is available
A low-cost source of fuels is available
Your boiler efficiency is low due to a poor load factor
Your site has an electrical load limit that will be expensive to upgrade
Your site needs more cooling, but has an electrical load limitation that is expensive to overcome, and you have an adequate supply of heat.
In short, absorption cooling may fit when a source of free or low-cost heat is available, or if objections exist to using conventional refrigeration.
Essentially, the low-cost heat source displaces higher-cost electricity in a conventional chiller.

Looks like they are using some kind of fuel to generate electricity and using the waste heat from the generator to provide cooling.
Therefore the cooling is a "freebie".

Now if they can shrink it down to something that fits in a car . . .
