Don't look now, but the next time the arrow on your gas gauge hovers near the ominous letter E, your wallet may have the privilege of making history at the pump.

Gas prices on Martha’s Vineyard topped $3 per gallon this weekend. (Staff photo by Tim Correira)

For the first time in Bay State history, gas prices have soared above the astronomical $3 mark - at gas stations on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

"I think I'll get a moped," said Nantucket resident Edward Hickey, 77, who will shell out $94.50 the next time he fills the 30-gallon tank on his Chevy Tahoe at On Island Gas, the record-busting service station near his Spark Avenue home where a gallon of regular was going for $3.08 as of yesterday.

There are two reasons that gas prices are so high:
1."Environmentalists"
2. Politicans = taxes

Um, we had both of those problems in 2001 when gas prices were half what they are now. Try again.

Mr. Hickey, they don't call it Taxachusetts for nothing. Get rid of your tax and spend liberal state legislature and maybe your gas prices will come down some.

Taxes have nothing do with $3+ on the islands. I pay $2.45 in a city outside of Boston. It's all about the transport costs.

Taxes mean our gas is somewhat more expensive than it is in Georgia and S.C., but we're probably still below the national average or close to it.

What fuels your theory that there is some kind of conspiracy in place to influence U.S. elections with high-priced oil?

Actually, I think it is more than that.

First, there alot of people around the world who Hate Bush and if they could wreck our economy the blame will fall on Bush and the Republicans. The MSM will make sure of that. Second, I think Speculators are pushing prices way beyond real value using ANY excuse to push prices up. Some Saudi prince passes gas and the price of oil goes up. Kind of reminds me of the stock market in the 1920's and the teck market in the 1990's.

When will it stop? Who knows. All I know is I hope those speculators really have their ASSES hanging out there when it comes crashing down."Hear that Mr.Soros."

As for as production levels OPEC has said they will increase production as needed (Saudi Arabia has said so). Damaged oil rigs nothing new that has happened for years no efect on the price per barrel. Example, a few years back one of the largest off shore oil rigs sank off the coast of Canada in a storm with the loss of the entire crew. Did the price of oil go up because of it? No, not a dime.

Don't weep for these leftists...the M*ssholes are filling their tanks for only $2.50 per gallon here in the People's Republic of Vermont while visiting their second and third 'vacation' homes this weekend. Native Vermonters? Many live in trailers and run-down shacks back in the 'rural' areas.

My point is that gasoline engined fuel economy hasn't moved much in 40 years.

I would think, in real terms, it has...think of all of the new safety equipment weight cars need to carry...and fuel efficiency would have to improve just to stay even.

I'm grateful for the safety measures...but you have to be real about the numbers.

Only $2.50 a gallon you say? I may just drive up and buy a tankfull LOL

Seriously, what concerns me is that the weekly gas budget is gobbling up people's disposable income, and that's going to effect the economy in places where money is tight.

You're dead right. The poor and middle class are getting squeezed here in New England, and they have yet to be hit by this coming winter's heating costs. We're going to get murdered. If heating oil reaches four or five bucks by the winter of 2006-2007; you're going to see a hell of a lot of people heading south and west.

If one has a lengthy ride to work, it hurts if your driving a gas guzzler. At this point, I don't see any indications on the interstate that people are overly concerned. Nobody is driving the speed limit to try and conserve..

Note to self:

1. Keep the Taurus.

2. Don't move to Martha's Vineyard.

I figured the traffic would have slowed down before the $2.50 a gallon but it has not. You have to remember the price has to go up to $3.81 a gallon to reach the cost of gas in 1980 if you factor in the cost of inflation.

$3.81 would be enough to alter my driving habits and lifestyle somewhat. I live close to work and shopping, so I would just consolidate my trips. I would probably start bringing my lunch to work, instead of eating out. That alone would save me $3 to $4 a day..

This is not news to me. Gas has been averaging $3.25 a gallon in rural Bridgeport, California for several years now.

My car stays parked all weekend now. I have a lot of commitments during the week and don't get particularly good mileage.

I don't go anywhere for lunch and don't use my car for the company's business.

Starting to remind me of 1979 and 1980 again, only we're the party in power.

The poor and working class are getting squeezed all across the country. A good chunk of this country lives paycheck to paycheck. A lower income family with two vehicles can't afford to maintain their levels of discretionary spending when they're paying $200-300 more a month for gasoline than they were a couple of years ago. As I posted a few days ago, this is all going to come home to roost when the holiday shopping season rolls around. That's when we'll finally have indisputable evidence that this is affecting our economy in a noticeably negative manner.

Something's gotta give, folks.
