Don't look now, but the next time the arrow on your gas gauge hovers near the ominous letter E, your wallet may have the privilege of making history at the pump.

For the first time in Bay State history, gas prices have soared above the astronomical $3 mark - at gas stations on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

"I think I'll get a moped," said Nantucket resident Edward Hickey, 77, who will shell out $94.50 the next time he fills the 30-gallon tank on his Chevy Tahoe at On Island Gas, the record-busting service station near his Spark Avenue home where a gallon of regular was going for $3.08 as of yesterday.

That's what you get for driving a gas guzzler, Eddie.

The next time I hear someone say that the war in Iraq is Bush's attempt to get cheap oil, I'm going to nail this picture to their forehead.

There are two reasons that gas prices are so high:
1."Environmentalists"
2. Politicans = taxes

Isn't just ironic as all getout these anti-war hippee, anarchic, protesters hold signs which read: NO BLOOD FOR OIL, yet we find out a huge UN scheme to embezzle funds in the FOOD FOR OIL program.

Liberals are always wrong about their preceptions. They live in a world of rose-colored glasses in a fantasy land of inverse reality.

Aw, that's too bad. All those rich "environmentalists" will have to pay more to fill the tanks on their SUVs. I'm sobbing with sympathy, here.

3. Worldwide demand drives up the price of crude. You can blame the Chinese in part for that.

We're at $2.59 here mid-Michigan. I'm really grateful for my little 5-speed Cougar - it gets close to 30 mpg.

3. 1.2 billion people in China and 1 billion people in India, all of whom want to be cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and drive SUVs just as much as Mr. Hickey.

The F150 has been all but put out to pasture, I'm driving the Ranger most of the time now.

Our friends up in Canada are paying about a dollar a litre:

Fair warning- they allow rather, ahem!, "salty" language on CGN-- don't click if you have tender ears!

Sort of the yin and yang of life...cheap stuff at Walmart=expensive gasoline at some point....that point is now.

I have been making the same observation for people, too. You can add Sam's Club, Costco, Target, Microcenter Mall, and the like to this list. All that money you saved over the past 10 years will be leaving your pocket as it pours out of the gas pump.

Mr. Hickey, they don't call it Taxachusetts for nothing. Get rid of your tax and spend liberal state legislature and maybe your gas prices will come down some.

The people on Nantucket and Martha's Vinyard have always been hostages of the gas pumps. When gasoline was under a buck on the mainland it was about $1.35 on the islands.

My 1966 VW bug 4-speed could get 30 mpg and it wasn't anywhere as aerodynamic as the Cougar and the engine had a compression ratio of ~7:1. Cougar safety, emissions, and performance are much better, but fuel economy hasn't moved in quite a while.
