Data Error May Have Hidden Some Warming

WASHINGTON - The puzzling difference between warming temperatures on the ground and not-so-warm readings in the sky above may have been resolved.

Atmospheric researchers studying global warming have sought for years to determine why readings taken from weather balloons didn't show the same increases as readings on the ground. The difference has fueled skeptics of global warming.

Now, researchers at Yale University say exposed instruments on the balloons may be the problem.

Weather balloons are sent up around the world twice a day — at local times equivalent to noon and midnight Greenwich mean time — and older versions of the balloons used temperature probes that were exposed. The result was higher-than-normal readings on probes sent up in daytime because of the sunlight exposure.

In more recent years, however, new probes were developed that were shielded from the light.

The result, while readings were rising on the ground they were not doing so up in the air, since the extra solar heating was no longer warming the probes.

After correcting for the problem, the researchers estimate there has been a global temperature increase of 0.4 degree Fahrenheit, per decade, for the last 30 years.

"Unfortunately, the warming is in an accelerating trend — the climate has not yet caught up with what we've already put into the atmosphere," said lead author Steven Sherwood, associate professor of geology and geophysics at Yale. "This has muddied the interpretation. "There are steps we should take, but it seems that shaking people out of complacency will take a strong incentive."

The findings are published in Friday's online issue of the journal Science.

The research was funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Of course all of the concrete and rooftops from all of the illegal's homes, not to mention the dozens of homes owned by every one of the leftists and Hollywood elite wouldn't have anything to do with this. BUT NOOOOO... it's caused by us regular folks in our one family home just trying to scratch by doing everything by the letter of the law and playing by all of the rules. We obviously have to scale back our expectations and standards.

So 1.2 degrees of temperature increase in 30 years is cause for alarm????????????????? Rofl!

WTF does illegal anything have to do with this? Quit trying to hijack threads. There are enough immigration threads where you can b*tch until your heart is content.

Huh? WTF does that have to do with global warming? Bump up the dosage, the meds are wearing off.

THIRTY MILLION PLUS extra rooftops and all of the concrete they need for their automobiles have no business in this equation of America as the GREAT CREATOR OF GLOBAL WARMING?

You must be a public school graduate and learned your advanced math skills at the knee of some leftist teachers.

If all of the law breakers in this country were to go back to their own counties and actually fight to change them and in the process bring said countries into the 21st century, do you really think these same leftists would be decrying the effects those economies would be having on global warming?

If so, I WANT WHAT YOU'RE SMOKING!

What a pant load. If the data you receive doesn't fit the agenda, make something up out of thin air. What's a little white lie when the good of the planet is involved. After all, it could be true in theory, right. You can justify anything if you try hard enough.

This does not make any sense to me. If the instruments are protected from the heating of the sun, wouldn't that cause a cooler temperature? It seems to me that they are grasping at straws on this one, they still have not been able to develop similar reason why the satellites show temperatures that conflict with ground based stations.

What seems to me to be more likely is that the atmosphere is not warming due to "greenhouse gasses" and passing its heat on to the soil, but rather that the soil is heating first due to radiative heating by the sun and then causing the atmosphere to warm up. This would account for the lag in atmospheric temperature vs ground temperature and seek to debunk the "greenhouse gas" theory.

Illegals produce more carbon dioxide in the United States than they would if they remained at home? Yeah, that makes sense.

How is this any different than if they are living in another country? Bump up the meds. They are wearing off.

No, the United States is always being blamed for the global warming when in actuality, quite a few NONRESIDENT CITIZENS (does this help the sensibilities of you coddler's of lawbreakers in our country?) just may be helping to create this problem. If it really is a problem as the jury is still out.

Here are a couple of tips...
#1 It is best to completely read the posts and come to the discussion with an actual argument and not some lame comment like,
"Illegals produce more carbon dioxide in the United States than they would if they remained at home?"
OR
"Bump up the dosage, the meds are wearing off."

#2 When posting, if you want to be taken seriously, it's best if you don't add a tagline that proves you drank the Kool Aid.

Make up your mind. Is the US contributing to global warming or not? If it is not, then the whole thing is a moot point and not worth even talking about. If, the article was blaming the US for this, I could see your point, but it is not.

Here are a couple of tips...

Another tip, look at someones 'since' date before calling them out. I have been a member of FR since before 9/11 and lurked for years before that.

No, but by tomorrow the MSM will be using this to bash America because of course America is to blame for everything. Connect the dots.

Jeepers! So what you're saying is that someone who's been here longer has more rights and privileges than someone who has come here later? You need to email this enlightened viewpoint to the President as he seems to have missed out on this one.

It's pretty sick to laugh at news that bad for us.

Consider the fact that it was at only about 7 degrees F colder (than now) at which snowfall exceeded melting and we had advance of continental glaciers. Even if we round down to 10,000 years ago for the glacial retreat, it would mean that for 9970 of those years, the average increase was 0.0006 degrees per year, while our last 30 years have been heating at 0.04 degrees per year.

In other words, our temperature increase is about 70 times what it was before 30 years ago... does that really not alarm you?!? Regardless of whether it is caused by us or not, the threat to our way of life is important.
