Snipers shoot dead Sri Lankan foreign minister

(Filed: 13/08/2005)

Sri Lanka's foreign minister, Lakshman Kadirgamar, was shot dead last night in an attack the police and military blamed on separatist rebels.

Mr Kadirgamar, 73, a hardliner in dealing with the island's Tamil Tiger rebels, was hit by sniper fire as he climbed out of his swimming pool. He was rushed to the National Hospital in Colombo, which was sealed off as other ministers arrived to visit his bedside.

The justice minister, John Senevirathne, said: "He worked tirelessly for peace throughout his career. It is a great loss."

Heavily armed police searched the plush central Colombo neighbourhood as helicopters circled overhead. Two people were arrested but no information was released on their identity. The Inspector General of Police, Chandra Fernando, said: "It's the Tigers."

The assassination came amid escalating tensions between the government and the rebels, who have repeatedly threatened to resume a two-decade civil war.

"It's the Tigers."

If Mizzou has recruited third world killers we might see a winning season at Faurot Field.

Well at least they didn't shoot a live foreign minister, that might have killed him.

Why would they want to shoot a "dead Foreign Minister" anyway?

That was my first thought as well.

It's the kind of thing that can ruin your whole day. 280 grains @ 1200-1330 fps - such a headache!

Well, I'd guess so.

It seems like a waste of good ammunition to me unless it was for target practice.

Yeah, that's the King's English. They're the ones who REALLY know how to speak correctly.

They're the ones who REALLY know how to speak correctly.

'Correctly' doesn't often get the point across as effectively in such an abbreviated medium as a news headline.

Hell, a US 5th grader could see the ambiguities in that and construct a more accurate headline.
