Under the radar (Democrats enjoy Near-Life experience)

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Our beloved mainstream media are complaining that President Bush is spending too much time at the "Western White House" in Crawford, Texas. Their stories about his "vacation" make it seem as if he's not doing a whole lot. But a closer look reveals that the president is working hard -- the Fourth Estate just doesn't bother to cover what he's really doing. Continues...

=============================================================

Democrats enjoy Near-Life experience

"Once a U.S. president wins a second term," writes Ian Bremmer in the International Herald Tribune, "his job becomes more difficult. Allies and rivals at home and abroad can see the end of his presidency and measure the drop in his political influence. Any second-term president must carefully maintain his political capital if he hopes to successfully push an agenda, and George W. Bush's capital has taken some serious hits in recent weeks." Mr. Bremmer, elaborating on his relentlessly upbeat assessment of Bush, writes that Bush's political capital has suffered deep cuts, thanks to Iraq, and "it's hard to see how the president stops the bleeding." Credibility questions about Bush are so increasingly increasing, "Bush now has less political capital with which to take risks." And if that doesn't brighten your mood, consider that a weakened president like Bush "can't afford to take risks," and is thus in "danger of losing his relevance. That's a problem for his domestic agenda . . ."

Indeed, on Monday, we got another grim reminder of just how problematical, when the weakened second-termer signed an energy bill which wasn't supposed to pass. The thing spent 4+ years in a coma. The signing came after the Diebold-elected Washed-Up Has-Been with no mandate got Congress to reauthorize the Patriot Act, pass a highway bill and CAFTA. (Personally, I wasn't terribly pleased with CAFTA. It will be very hard for me to vote for Bush again!) As Congress headed home, the powerless lame duck appointed Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the U.N.

The highway bill had been stalled for two years. Disputes over state funding. Only a President with 'depleted capital' could muscle it through. After the August recess, Congress puts pro-gun liability reform on the lame duck's desk, as he requested. Oh, and ANWR oil drilling. Hard to keep up with this lame duck.

The Donkeys can't keep up with the lame duck either. Even while he's on "vacation" in Crawford. Democrats griping about 'Vacationgate' shows why, to be a liberal, you have to be an idiot. Democrats accuse Bush of killing, looting, polluting and torturing, then complain when he takes time off. Month-long vacation from evil-doing? No way! Get back to work!

But 'vacationgate' went nowhere politically. And with the economy firing on all cylinders and the Valerie Plame brouhahahahaha Plaming out, it's back to the Iraq war. Or Jeff Gannon. Or Diebold. Or the Downing Street Memos. Or going after John Roberts' kids. Or John Roberts' kids' adoption records. Or mooching off of Alzheimers patients, seniors and needy chirren.

Broadcasting juggernaut Air America, "breaking the right-wing stranglehold on our nation's airwaves" and exposing the truth about the drunken Chimpy liar to all of the network's 2 remaining listeners, got caught mooching mega-bucks from The Bronx's Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club, a government-backed social-service agency which, before losing $10 million in city contracts, had served seniors, people with disabilities, 20,000 needy kids and 20 needy Air America broadcasters. Libbies must "borrow" mega-moolah to run a radio show, but insist they can balance the federal budget. Anyway, you'd have to read the New York Times not to know anything about this. The New York Post reports that "investigators uncovered 'significant inappropriate transactions and falsified documents.'" But don't worry, Dan Rather is on the case.

For the record, Al Franken categorically denies having any recollection of having anything to do with this, insisting that only Evan Cohen, the founder of Air America, is corrupt. "He borrowed $875,000," Franken told both listeners to his radio show this week. "I don't know why they did it and I don't know where the money went." How could I? I'm only in charge!

But it's not just Air America. These days, nothing seems to be going right for Democrats, poor things. The AFL-CIO is falling apart; their nutcase 527s are closing shop; in July, the jobless recovery churned out 207,000 new jobs; the housing market is still sizzling. And this week, in only the latest blow to Democrats, the Shuttle landed safely.

For Democrats, the only bright spot was their victorious defeat in Ohio's special election. Democrats savored their hard-fought defeat -- we loss by only thousands of votes! -- saying it's a bellwether for the '06 midterm elections, when Democrats could ride a tidal wave of defeats just like this. They can hardly wait! Democrat Paul Hackett, a veteran of the Iraq war, ran as a pro-Bush, pro- Iraq war "conservative" in TV ads. Republican Jean Schmidt, his opponent, ran as a pro-Bush, pro-Iraq war conservative. So, the upshot here is that a conservative defeated a "conservative." Liberals celebrated. A "conservative" was defeated! Finally, the liberal comeback! It was an exhilarating near-life experience for libbies.

Jean Schmidt, reeling from her stinging victory, replaces Rob Portman, who was named U.S. trade representative by the powerless lame duck.

Bottom line: A Democrat "war hero" guy gets beat by a girl, but Dems insist they can beat al-Qaeda.

If they keep this up, Dems will join the dinosaurs in extinction. I can just see it now. The Tombstone will bear this inscription: We almost survived George W. Bush!

Anyway, that's...
My Two Cents...

The liberals keep beating that 'lame duck' drum, wishing it were true, wishing somebody in the world would believe them, like a lunatict on the steetcorner screaming at passersby.

And Dubya just keeps doing what he's doing. Ya gotta love it.

EXCELLENT! I swear, I thought it was a Mark Steyn piece until I saw your name at the end (and, as you know, that's the highest compliment possible).

I may not agree with George Bush 100% of the time, but 85-90% is good enough. And By God, he does get things done and I do know who is in charge there. Actually he is a little sneaky, just when I think he has let something go, forgotten about it. SHAZAM there it is being signed into law.

Being a lame duck seems to be like voodoo. It only works if you believe in it. GWB is not a believer in his lame duck status. In fact it wonder if he mocks it or just doesn't care what the dems are doing.

"Mark Steyn's got competition!!"

I will have to double bump that!
JH2's 2cents have always reminded me of Steyn.

I'm not always able to post, but I always read.
And, a most excellent read, it is.
