Stavropol, August 9, Interfax - USSR ex-president Mikhail Gorbachev made a private visit to his native land - the Cossack village of Privolnaya near Stavropol.
The Soviet leader went to the grave of his parents there and gave to the local parish the house where his father and mother used to live in the center of the village, Anatoly Terlev, deputy head of the local administration, told Interfax-South.
In addition, Gorbachev gave 30 thousand roubles (about 1 thousand dollars) to the local church for setting up cupolas.
During the trip, the ex-president also met with local people and informed them that he would soon come again. On the same day, he came to the stadium at the district center, the village of Krasnogvardeiskoye, to talk to local sports teams.
He also met with his classmates and friends at the school he used to attend as well as today’s schoolchildren, the news agency was told.
On Monday, Gorbachev flew out from the airport in Mineralnye Vody to Moscow.
