Day laborers erect "Levyville" (Farmingville, NY)

About 20 Mexican immigrants set up a "tent city" Thursday next to a Farmingville house shuttered by Brookhaven Town officials because it was overcrowded, and an activist gave them supplies for a sign calling their community "Levyville," in reference to Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy.

The tenants of 196 Berkshire Dr., most of them day laborers but including four youngsters ages 10 to 17, said they spent Wednesday night sleeping in four tents on the property or on a concrete slab next to the house.

A Latino activist, the Rev. Allan Ramirez, gave the immigrants sheets and spray paint for the "Levyville" sign. "It is the county that is responsible when there is homelessness in the community," he said.

The house was ordered shut by a court order sought by Brookhaven Town officials. According to court papers, town inspectors determined the house was home to 14 to 42 tenants on different days, and had various violations including blocked doors, exposed electrical wires and no smoke detectors. The town has moved to close seven houses containing as many as 240 tenants since late June.

The erection of the tent city set off a media frenzy Thursday, with TV crews swarming the property as the former tenants of the house told of spending a night sleeping outside. A man who would identify himself only as Ignacio said he was the father of the four youngsters.

"I feel terrible," he said in Spanish. "I'll sleep in a tree, but my children?" He said he and his wife had been separated from two of their children, ages 10 and 15, for the past three years, and that they just arrived in Farmingville two weeks ago.

"They threw us out worse than animals," his wife, who did not want to be named, said in Spanish. "They don't have any heart. It's not human."

Get out of my house!!! America is my house!

A while back Michael Medved asked for homeless people to call his show. Almost every caller said that they were homeless by choice. As one caller said "I don't want to be tied down man."

On the other hand every caller thought that society owed them medical care, schooling, food and shelter.

"Now they're bringing the shantytowns with them", Citizens should file a complaint with the health department, and force owner to get housing permit. This is terrible. Can't believe the government keep allowing this to happen. There goes the neighborhood. How much money does he get per kid from welfare- should be enough to rent a place. I give up

I LOVE AMERICA:
I come for visit, get treated regal, so I stay, who cares I'm illegal

Cross the border, poor and broke, take the bus, and say customs broke,

Nice man treat me good there, say I need to see welfare.

Welfare say come down no more, we send you cash, right to your door.

Welfare checks they make you wealthy, Medicare, it keeps you healthy.

By and by, I got plenty money, thanks to American working dummy.

Write to friends in motherland, tell hem to come as fast as they can.

They come in rags and cheby trucks, I buy big house with welfare bucks.

They all come we live together, some say they no like the weather.

Fourteen families, they all move in, Neighbor's patience growing thin.

Finally, white guys, they move away, I buy more houses and then I say, find more illegal aliens, Houses I rent. In the garden I put up a TENT, send for more families. They just trash, but they all draw more welfare cash.

Everything is mucho good, soon we own the neighborhood.

We have hobby, it's called "Breeding", Welfare pay for baby feeding.

Kids need dentist, wife needs pills, we get free, we got no bills.

American crazy, he pay all year, to keep his welfare running here.

We think America damn good place, too damn good for white-man race.

If they no like us, then they can go, got lots of room in Mexico.

LOL. Perhaps the many more homeless not by choice didn't have the opportunity to make a call to the show.

You're not seriously suggesting that the callers were somehow representative of the homeless, are you?

I lived in Farmingville for a few years, and I have nothing but sympathy for the laborers. I would go to the 7-11 every morning and see them there waiting for work. They were respectful, polite and just looking for some hard work for lousy pay. They didn't hang out there drinking or making a "nuisance" of themselves. They did all the work that traditional Long Islanders would never do. I was horrified when those 2 animals tried to kill 2 laborers by beating them almost-to-death. And why did they try to kill them? Just because they were Mexican? Because they wanted to work? The offenders wouldn't be caught dead picking potatoes out on the East end!

All these people want to do is work hard, to earn enough money to feed their familys and they are getting abuse at every turn. It disgusts me.

I remember when Farmingville was considered a "white trash" town filled with guys driving camaros and women with hair teased up to the height of a fence post. Central Suffolk in general was never the classiest place (outside of a few choice towns). Can't say I'm surprised that the day laborers would choose it as a place to live.

Coming soon to a neighborhood near you courtesy of our own federal government.

Levy is only taking this stance because the base of his support is still blue collar white flighters from NYC (and their children). I guarantee you that when the voting demographics of the county change, he (more likely his political descendents) will change their tune.

There are 20 million illegal aliens in the United States. This is an outrage! They are illegal aliens. They must leave this country. This is not Mexico. This is not Central America. They must go home

If they are prevented from making money (employer sanctions) and have no place to live illegally, (40 in a house) they will return home

If their neighbors put up with this, they deserve having this pest-hole in their city.
