Carters visit sub base, to join dive

The USS Jimmy Carter will depart Kings Bay with former president, wife today ---

ST. MARYS -- The USS Jimmy Carter is scheduled to depart from its first visit to Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base today, after picking up two temporary crew members: the boat's namesake, Jimmy Carter, and his wife, Rosalynn.

The former president and first lady are scheduled for an overnight dive on the Navy's third and final Seawolf-class fast-attack submarine. This will be the first dive for the former governor of Georgia since his Navy career ended in 1953, and the first dive ever for his wife.

Carter's visit marks the first time he has visited Kings Bay. He was president in 1978 when the seldom-used Army depot was officially designated as a submarine base.

The Navy said details of the Carters' visit are being withheld for security reasons. Officials planned to give the couple a full tour of the base before they depart today on their overnight dive.

After his return, Carter plans to hold a news conference Friday to answer questions about his first sub dive in more than 50 years. The event is not open to the public.

Leave it to the peanut brained president to soak up the publicity at the launching of a tub named after him. The ship shown in your story at least has the correct color.

"This will be the first dive for the former governor of Georgia since his Navy career ended in 1953..."

Only in America could a peanut headed, hare horrified, traitorous, woosy, PEACE ACTIVIST, have an instrument of war named after him. Whose frickin' no thinkin' brain thought of this one?

Even if he hadn't been a sub officer (which of course he was), I think it's appropriate that his namesake vessel is designed to sink.

Any sub named The Jimmy Carter will sink on its maiden voyage (and Carter along with it I presume.)

The U.S.S. Jimmy Carter?

Yikes, things are wose than I thought. By FAR!

Couldn't they at least call it the Barney Fife, the Goober, the Gomer Pyle or some other name with more class? Bonzo would be an improvement.
