Jerusalem, August 11: US President George W. Bush says a planned pullout of Jewish settlers from occupied Gaza 'will be good for Israel'.
Bush's remarks, in an interview given to Israel's Channel One television and aired on Thursday, appeared to be an attempt to boost Prime Minister Ariel Sharon against Jewish rightists seeking to thwart the withdrawal due to start on Aug 17.
"I believe the decision that Prime Minister Sharon has made and is going to follow through on will be good for Israel," Bush said, interviewed at his ranch in Crawford, Texas.
Asked why he thought Israel's 'disengagement' from the occupied land would help Israeli security, Bush replied: "First of all the previous system wasn't working. There was an intifada (Palestinian uprising), there was death, there was killing. And if you notice, there's been a calm in attacks".
Palestinian militants have generally observed a ceasefire since February.
Bush reiterated the goal of a US-backed 'road map' peace plan to achieve the goal of a Palestinian state alongside Israel and its call on Palestinians to dismantle militant groups.
"I think in the long run two states living side by side in peace is the ultimate solution for Israel's security. In the meantime we've got to work, you know, to dismantle terrorist organisations, and that's precisely what the road map calls for," he said.

No, the decision came from certain prevailing (in speech but not future votes) elements in my own Republican Party. See, the following in our 2004 Platform.
"Republicans agree with President Bush that Israel's plan to remove all settlements from Gaza and several settlements from the West Bank is a courageous step toward peace in the face of continuing terrorist violence. This initiative can stimulate progress toward peace as laid out in the Road Map launched by President Bush."

...wrong again. The terrorists there are attacking Jewish neighborhoods--even with rocket attacks--frequently. The terrorists there also say that the expulsion from Gaza will not stop their attacks.
Ping.
BUMP!

A terrorist state on her own land can hardly be considered a Biblical blessing.
I agree, and thanks! It's bad for Israel, and it was driven for a long time by the morally bankrupt few among us.
Israel cannot hold Gaza under its current deployment. Having 10000 Jews in scattered settlements, each surrounded by hundreds of thousands of Palestinian in towns and villages is very hard to defend militarily. The IDF can not be everywhere to protect the Jews when they travel between settlements or in the settlements. If Israel wants the Gaza, they have to move in, expelled most of the Palestinians and move in 100,000's of Jewish settlers. If the PA lets Hamas/Hezbollah/Al Qaeda move in and use Gaza as a base for future terror attacks, after Israel's withdraw, the US should let Israel retake Gaza with brute military firepower, expel all the Palestinians and move in with a massive Jewish population, and make Gaza a permanent part of Israel.
There I fixed it for you.
God help us but our leaders are CLUELESS with what they deal. Islam might win yet, God forbid.
