The Hill: Rumors of another McCain ticket (McCain/Kerry in 2008?)
The Hill ^ | August 11, 2005 | Albert Eiseleand By Jeff Dufour

During the last presidential campaign, there was much talk about a Kerry-McCain ticket after Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) sounded out Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) about joining him on a bipartisan fusion ticket.

McCain obviously turned Kerry down, but as the 2008 election approaches there are signs that an equally intriguing McCain-Kerry ticket could be in the works. If such an improbable thing comes to pass, its genesis might well be traced back to a one-on-one breakfast meeting July 27, when the two decorated Vietnam veterans huddled for more than an hour at La Colline restaurant on Capitol Hill.

Fellow diners said the pair was engaged in earnest conversation throughout the breakfast, although Kerry spokesman David Wade characterized it simply as a chat between two “longtime friends.”

The meeting came in the wake of McCain’s increasingly critical stance on the Bush administration’s conduct of the war on terrorism, particularly the treatment of suspected terrorists at prison camps in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. McCain, who spent years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam’s Hanoi Hilton, led the fight just before the August recess to add an amendment to the defense appropriations bill prohibiting harsh treatment of detainees held in American custody, despite personal lobbying by Vice President Cheney.

McCain rebutted the administration’s argument that the legislation would tie its hands in dealing with people who are not POWs but “terrorists” by declaring on the Senate floor that it’s not “about who they are. It’s about who we are.”

Guess it’s unlikely there will be a Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign if McCain and Kerry team up in 2008.

Senators McCain and Kerry together couldn't tell you the time of day.

If he wants it so bad, he might do himself well to appeal to Republican primary voters, ie conservatives.

I think he will once again be shocked that Democrats aren't going to deliver him the Republican nomination for President.

Right, I don't think either would switch parties. More likely indys. Paving the way, of course, to another clinton minority win - her only hope.

"-- someone is blowing smoke on this one to keep Kerry's hopes alive."

... and who might that be ? ... Some woman who is just dying to get back in the WH and needs to figure out a way to stay in the shadows for as long as possible since her campaign ( and temper ) could not stand the light of day ? Hhmmmm ?

The more smoke and the less time to have the attention focused on her, the better off she is....

But Teddy Kennedy can. Ask him and he'll give a quick answer:

"It's happy hour!"

interesting
if it were McCain Kerry v. Hillary i would make my own nation somewhere and leave pronto.
I thought that the only way i would ever vote for McCain was if Hillary was the oppositions nominee however these choices leave me disgusted

John Kerry is believed to have been a Vietnam Veteran, and a Cambodia Veteran, and a Blackfoot War Veteran. He is believed to have received a purple heart or two or ten in one or all of those wars as well.

As Chairman of the Commerce Committee, he cannot afford to take a chance to run with Kerry and be ousted from his Chairmanship along with Armed Service committee assignments.

McCain wouldn't bring any votes to Kerry but it would sure get out every last conservative vote in America -- not a winning ticket. The Hill forgets that a lot of McCain support in 2000 came from crossover RATs!

You're right, McCain was a member of the Keating five wasn't he? Oh, but that's old news now and not important. Screwing the citizens is the national sport of D.C.

Don't think he will switch to Indy either and that is only because of his Committee assignments in the Senate -- cannot take a chance because they will strip him faster than you can blink with Senator Inhofe leading the charge.

Well they already agree on one thing... they both hate Bush. That was probably enough to get them through cocktails and appetizers.

"Perun mee, offcifer, I'm nut as think as you drunk I yam(hic)!"

This is the senator's office slogan.

Cheers!
