GOP proposal: "You keep candidate; we'll keep ours"

Republicans must still have nightmares about it.

When Doug Forrester was running for U.S. Senate in 2002, and incumbent Democrat Robert Torricelli was besieged by ethics questions, the GOP could just about taste victory. Then, with six weeks to go, Torricelli dropped out and the Democrats drafted former Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who went on to win.

Now with the race for governor heating up, Republican State Committee Chairman Tom Wilson has proposed an unusual deal to his Democratic counterpart: Promise you won't dump your candidate, and we'll promise not to dump ours.

"Let me make a promise you can count on: You will be invited to the Corzine Inaugural Ball."

A likely outcome indeed. A near certainty with the help of the NJ Supreme Court.

Why IS NJ so overwhelmingly liberal?

A serious question I have; it just doesn't seem like it should be.........

My guess is that you have a lot of urban areas that vote 90% Democrat combined with a lot of limousine liberals living in the suburbs (NJ is the most densely populated state and has either the highest or second highest per capita income). Then, add in the fact that the GOP is braindead. Look at the last two NJ GOP governors: Kean and Whitman. Not much to get inspired about.

Once upon a time, the people of New Jersey, revolted against Dem Governor "Jim "Flim-Flam" Florio and his huge tax increase. In one election, "safe" U.S. Senator Bradley, who had nothing to do with the taxes directly, was almost defeated by an unknown named Christy Whitman.

In the state elections, Republicans were given veto proof 3/4's majorities to undo Florio's handiwork. The NJ pubbies were mushy, had no real interest in fixing the tax and spend mess, and (as far as I can tell) permanently marred their ability to appeal to the voters as a reform operation. Given that, it didn't take long for them to lose their majority status. NJ still has not recovered from the Florio/Republican debacle.

I can merely speculate based on my observations. New Jersey is the most densely populated state with heavy urbanization. With that comes large and poor inner-city populations which, as you know, almost always vote democrat. This is compounded by a lot of legal immigration and tremendous illegal immigration. NJ's proximity to NY and the media there are also of great influence. It seems s**t flows south from Boston. South Jersey, part of which is south of the Mason-Dixon line, is like an entirely different state.

It's also influenced by the Philadelphia's Lib-RAT media.

As a New Jersey Republican, I believe the answer is because the NJ Republican Party, with the exception of Brett Schundler, Chris Smith and very few others, is just as corrupt and pro-death as the NJ Democrat Party. Christy Whitman, was Bill Clinton in a skirt. She wouldn't even sign a partial birth abortion ban. They certainly don't energize the base. Then of course there are all the dogs and dead people voting in the urban areas.
