Ten years ago today I was working on a salmon boat in Alaska miserable as hell. I would pass the time day dreaming of getting off the boat with my fat check and heading to Fall Tour. The news of Jerry's death was like a sucker punch.
IIRC, Jerry was a fan of William F. Buckley.

The first Dead concert I went to was on 5/14/70 at Meramec Community College, Kirkwood, MO.
Grateful Dead and New Riders of the Purple Sage. From that point on I have enjoyed Country Rock.

I used to catch this Dead cover band called Cubensis that plays in L.A. and Orange County (southern Calif.). They're real big in the area -- excellent sound, very closely mimics all of the Dead's tunes.
Anyway, I was talking to the lead singer during a set break, and he was telling this story about how he was on a flight up to Oregon once, to see the Grateful Dead play. Who should sit down next to him but, seriously, Jerry Garcia.
This guy says "Hey, I play in a Grateful Dead band." and Jerry says, "Oh yeah? Me too!"

Bunch of smelly losers wearing tie-dyes. And the local news had a field day, with pictures of deadheads urinating in peoples yards, the selling of LSD from car trunks, deadhead females talking like they were akin to the manson family.

Garcia was an able manager, and multi-talented. A few years before his death he married in an Episcopal ceremony, was running his fashion design company, still doing concerts, and trying to clean-up his drug habits. Ironically, he didn't survive the "treatment".
My husband and I were only in our teens when Jerry died, and got into the music in our college years. Our bedroom has a couple thousand CD cases of Dead shows (among many others). Loved Phil & Friends, and enjoyed Phish...like Gov't Mule, the Allman Brothers, et al. But nothing can top the Dead at the height of their game.
I'm solidly conservative, and husband is a right-leaning moderate. I ignore musician's political statements if they make them - many musicians in the jamband scene are liberals but generally don't make a scene about their leanings (unlike more mainstream "musicians").
