President George W Bush today spoke about the Energy Policy Act of 2005 he signed into law today at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M.

Before he departed for New Mexico he spoke to reporters at WACO expressing condolences regarding the death from lung cancer of ABC broadcaster Peter Jennings

QUOTE

THE PRESIDENT: “Laura and I were saddened to learn about the death of Peter Jennings. Peter Jennings had a long and distinguished career as a news journalist. He covered many important events, events that helped define the world as we know it today. A lot of Americans relied upon Peter Jennings for their news. He became a part of the lives of a lot of our fellow citizens, and he will be missed. May God bless his soul.”

Over the weekend there has been much talk on TV and FR about a lady called Cindy Sheehan of Gold Star Families for Peace and her demands to speak to the President. For further details on this please see yesterday’s dose and for suggestions in how one can support the President against this women please see Dr Deb post Number 369

If one wants to see a photo of the lady roasting in the Texas heat here is a link for you Cindy Sheehan near her makeshift camp near a road leading to the President’s Ranch

Last Friday Vice President Dick Cheney led a delegation to Saudi Arabia to pay respects following the recent death of King Fahd which included former President GHW Bush and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Besides Fighting Back, Bill Sammon has also written two other books about the President, and I would recommend them as well.

They are Misunderestimated: the President Battles Terrorism, John Kerry, and the Bush-haters and At Any Cost: How Al Gore Tried to Steal the Election.

All three of these books give you an idea of how the President operates, how he deals with his staff and cabinet, and the immense amount of self-control he has.

I also liked Karen Hughes book and A Matter of Character.

You will end up with quite a bill from Amazon, although I think some of the Sammon books are now in paperback.

Welcome to the Dose, by the way!

Oh, I should tell you that I waited almost three years before I read At Any Cost. The 2000 election had me so upset it took me a long time before I could read about the horrible events in Florida. I was glad I finally did, though. It is a darn good book, and one which I am keeping so that my grandchildren will know what really happened.

If they want to get rid of pork they need to give the President a line-item veto.

Remember, the GOP Congress tried to give clintoon a line item veto for just this purpose. And the SC declared it unconstitutional.

Bush needs to get at least 3 appointments to the SC before we can have a line-item veto.

Boy do I know what you went through moving! I just finished helping my neighbor move literally 2 doors down and the moving company gave her an estimate of $3000 to move her. You can only imagine how much stuff this woman has, and she lives by herself. Anyway about 8 of us in the neighborhood got together, boxed her up, rented a U-Haul ($19.95) and moved the boxes leaving the big moving van for the furniture. Believe it or not we got their bill down to $643.00. I told her she is not allowed to EVER move again.

snugs, agree, A Charge to Keep, gives good insight into "who" W is.

Hope your Dad is a bit better. Give him our best regards and tell him we're thinking of him.

Deb, 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America is a delightful read. I'm almost half-way through it. Do read Black Rednecks & White Liberals by Thomas Sowell. That one should be required reading.

In all my many moves (this is at least #27 over the years), I have never had new neighbors step up to help move me in. You're right, it's a very good sign. In spite of all the wacky things that happened as touching this move, beginning with me becoming violently and painfully ill the day I committed to renting this place, God swept a path before me at every obstacle.

it is a big load sometimes.

Yes, I could feel that in your post. I've been praying this evening that God would strengthen your father's immune system and keep other infections away from him while he heals. God bless and keep you all.

Does anyone have a comment on whether I should get Karen's or Ari's book?

If it were up to me, I'd get Karen's book. Ari's was very dry, with few of the kinds of insights into GWB's presidency that I would like to have seen from him. Instead, his book was devoted to describing his relationship with the WH press corps. In my opinion, Ari seemed somewhat defensive about the fact that the relationship between the WH Press Secretary and the media is necessarily something of an adversarial one. In other words, Ari almost seemed to me to be apologetic about the job he had to do while working for the President. Explaining himself to the media seemed to be the rationale for his writing the book. The subtext seemed to be, "Please like me. I was only doing my job."

It isn't a memoir and, although some of the passages about 9/11 were fascinating, it isn't really even a particularly useful look at the historical record.

Others may see it differently, and others may not mind his very dry writing style. But on the whole, I thought the book was a bore and a disappointment.
