Until people realize that driving an SUV with 1 or 2 people in it is not exactly "fuel efficient", gas prices will continue to remain high.

How about until car manufacturers design a car that can legally carry 4 or 5 children on one row of seat. With parents having greater than twin multiples and carpooling, 4 and 5 children in a car and in carseats is not uncommon. Yet Detroit continues to design cars that can hold a max of 4 adults and even fewer children, since kids can't ride in the front. A tiny subcompact should be able to be easily modified to carry 6 kids in specially designed carseats. (Think optional specially designed modular back seats.) It has the room and can easily carry this payload. Where is this car?

Until people realize that we should not depend on FOREIGN OIL..Nor listen to enviro-nuts who know nothing about the Highly Natural Occuring Product..Crude Oil..gas prices will continue to remain high.. People really should do a bit of research on the industry. Try WTRG.com

Try doing a little Math. Take the cost of a New Chevy Tahoe, use 12,000 miles per year, include average financing, insurance, maintenance and depreciation over 4 years. Look at the total cost per mile at $1.50 and $2.50 per gallon of gasoline. The change in cost per mile is about 10%. Not enough to drastically change behavior and preferences.

I've got one kid and a full size van. I get around 15 miles per gallon. During the school year, I carpool 6 kids to the school I work at. I filled the van the other day and it cost $48.00. But now that's it's summer, it's usually only me and 1 or 2 kids.

If I were to trade my van in for something else, it would cost way more in my money and gasoline used. First, I'd get stuck with a car payment I don't want. Next, even if I got a mini-van, I couldn't drive the 6 kids anymore because of the passenger side airbag in new cars. So, two cars would have to make the same 19 mile round trip, twice a day for the second, that my present gas guzzler does now.

So, oh great wizard, should I buy a third car for summer use or continue to use my van even if only one or two people are in it? I eagerly await your answer because your judgement seems so considered.

Warning: You might find that some people can be extremely sensitive about this. ;O)

The typical oversized SUV driver in my area is a 25-45 y.o. woman about 5'4" whose main priority while driving seems to be talking on her cell phone. Once in a while, if I'm lucky, I may actually see a passenger or two in the vehicle.
