Several years ago, the oil cartel said they wanted gas at $3.50 per gallon in the US, since the EU was paying about that. Outrageous price fixing.

I don't see what will stop the oil companies from charging $3 or even $5 per gallon. Heck why stop there? Why not $10 per gallon? No one is going to do anything about it until the gas prices start hurting the market. When investors start getting hurt by it, then Congress will say, "gee I think we might have to look into the gas prices."

I think the final determining factor will be worldwide usage. The days of $2.50 per gallon gas will become a happy memory as prices continue to rise.

I don't think 87-octane gasoline will reach US$3.00 per US gallon. The reason is simple: we've already reached the point that people will start to drive less and/or buy more fuel-efficient vehicles, which will eventually cause an oversupply of gasoline and the price will nosedive from natural laws of supply and demand.

If I were Honda I would be ready to build at least 500,000 per year of the new 8th-generation Honda Civic model for the US market, given that the new Civic will be roomier, more powerful, and yet use 5-6% less fuel than the current Civic models. And Honda has another even more fuel efficient model (Honda Fit, due late Spring 2006) that could become very popular here in the USA.

Gas is $2.29 here.

It is freaky how unleaded PREMIUM is a few bucks cheaper than regular.

It won't hit 3 bucks here, but it may in LA if it goes to $2.45 or so here.

Drilling in ANWAR is not going to bring prices down. It will take many years after drilling before oil can flow. Prices will probably be around 5.00 a gallon by then.

The only relieve, although temporary, is to remove all taxes on gasoline and fix prices by Federal law. Another problem is to remove all gasoline mixtures and allow only one. Next is to allow only the low and highest octane of fuel and eliminate the middle rating. Most all cars can burn low octane and it would take many years for it to do any damage to the car. Valve clatter and a slight loss of power could be a nuisance, but so what. Oh, I hear the screams from the oil industry now, but just look at their soring profits. This is a national security problem.

A recent caller to Rush illustrated a big part of the gas problem we have now, and that is that each state has their own environmental regulations that require unique formulations. If gas was the same nationwide, it would easy to divert supplies when needed. As it stands now, refineries are making "custom" gasolines for different locales, which inhibits production capabilities and limits where the gas can be sold.
