Day labor center proposal stirs national debateBy Samson Habte
Examiner Staff Writer
It's not every day that a state legislator is featured on a national cable news program.
But there was Prince William County Del. Scott Lingamfelter last week, appearing on CNN's "Lou Dobbs Tonight" to discuss a proposal to build a day laborer hiring center in Herndon - a plan critics say will encourage illegal immigration.
"My position is we should not be spending taxpayer money to finance that which is really subsidizing what is an illegal activity," said Lingamfelter, a Dale City Republican.
Lingamfelter's cameo should not have been surprising: The day laborer debate has thrust Herndon into the national spotlight. Politicians and interest groups from all over the country have weighed in on a local land-use issue that has been a proxy for debates over illegal immigration.
The debate reached a crescendo in Herndon last week. Herndon's Planning Commission decided early Thursday morning - after hours of public testimony - to recommend against approval of the facility, which would be built with a $170,000 grant from Fairfax County. Herndon's Town Council will vote on final approval Aug. 16.
The influence of national actors was evident during Herndon's hearings. Thomas Fitton, president of the national legal organization Judicial Watch, appeared and threatened the town with a lawsuit, arguing it was illegal to build a facility that would encourage illegal immigration.
"If the citizens of Herndon can't persuade you ... to obey the law, perhaps a court can," Fitton said.
Herndon resident Linda Muller stood to read an anti-facility message she had been "authorized to deliver" by Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., a proponent of tighter immigration laws.
But Ann Czonka, a town resident, rose to decry "outsider action from groups that have their own agenda."
Thirty-year Herndon resident Ruth Tatlock delivered a more pointed message.
"Outside agitators - please, please stay away," Tatlock said.
The labor debate
Where the debate over day laborer sites stands in parts of the region:
- Arlington County: County money was used in 2003 to build a facility in Shirlington.
- Montgomery County: Contributed county funds to a 1991 site in Silver Spring; built a county-funded site in Wheaton in 2005.
- Fairfax County: Appropriated $400,000 in 2005 to build four sites - including one in Herndon - throughout the county. Plans bogged down over difficulty finding suitable locations.
- Prince William County: Task force recommended building a facility earlier this year, but local officials have ruled out using county funds to build one.
(How many American citizen teenagers who are desparate for extra money to you see getting summer jobs out of the "DAY LABOR" centers?
(What part of illegal does the OBL not understand?)

We have a day laborer center here that is staffed by two cops who drive the illegal aliens to their jobs. The illegals and their employers meet up on federal property (across the street)to negotiate for work. The center has a washer and dryer and a phone to call employers. Additionally, the cops issue the illegals with I.D. cards.
On the brighter side though, you could look at the center as a "roach motel" of sorts. It would be a lot easier to pick 'em up and deport 'em if they all voluntarily show up at a designated spot! :)
My position, is the use of the "illegal alien" workforce, is modern day slavery.
Funding "day labor" centers to supply the Underground Economy with a steady flow of cheap labor across the country using American tax payer's money for illegal aliens breaking federal immigration law is not going to reap quite the dividends the OBL might have expected...

Correct. It is just throwing more fuel on the firestorm that is coming when REAL U.S. CITIZENS get fed up with the Washington government's 'license to kill' for illegals and the theft of tax dollars to subsidize these criminal illegals. How can the federal government say that one group of people in this country MUST OBEY THE LAW OR SUFFER and give another group CARTE BLANCHE to break our laws?? IS THIS NOT MAJOR HYPOCRISY ??
Or more likely, a single place for Immigration to ignore so they are less likely to stumble over an illegal and have to process paperwork before releasing them.
Instead of funding "Day Labor Hiring Centers", our tax dollars should be spent funding "Illegal Alien Holding and Deportation Centers"!
Contractors in Southern California call the "day labor" pickup points "the slave markets."

1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.
Quisling: a synonym for traitor, someone who collaborates with the invaders of his country.
Is it just me, or is it weird to anyone else that these people have no trouble tolerating illegal aliens from foreign countries taking over their communities, but don't respect the wishes of their fellow American citizens (to see out laws obeyed) and want these "outside agitators" to "please, please stay away"?
No, it isn't just you. Blatantly ignoring current immigration law by our elected representatives federal, state and local is becoming the norm. It's all about money and greed.
This weekend, we hit the Little Rock and area Flea markets...it's been a hobby of ours for decades.
Those places are now frequented by Spanish speaking families and they make no effort to speak English amongst themselves, nor do the school age children we saw with them.
They're everywhere here in Arkansas. And they don't plan on leaving.

HERNDON DAY LABOR CAMP
Isn't it pretty??? Thank you Washington, DC.
Nexy they'll be taking your property for building their new super day labor center....
Law abiding citizens should be taking pictures of the license plates of the employers that hire illegal aliens. Neither the employer or the illegal alien are paying income tax. Time to use the IRS to bust both of them.
Protect our borders and coastlines from all foreign invaders!

The problem is that noone is doing that! i go to church in Herndon - I want them deported back to their own country.
