Teen jobs & illegals

Monday, August 8, 2005

It's been a long, hot summer for young people unable to find jobs this year as teen employment dips to its lowest level ever. And this, despite 20 months of job growth nationwide. So, where are the teen jobs?

Some are being taken by older folks looking to supplement retirement savings. Some are being taken by 20-somethings who didn't land employment in their chosen fields. But more so than ever before, jobs are being snatched up by low-paid, undocumented immigrants for whom employers don't pay taxes...SNIP

That's one of the findings by the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University. Director Andrew Sum says he's never seen anything like it.

According to Bureau of Labor statistics, businesses hired 3.7 million immigrants over the past five years; about half to 60 percent were illegal immigrants.

In New York, some 336,000 employees report working in jobs that businesses say don't exist..SNIP

Not only are teens being squeezed out of summer employment, they're losing a valuable line on their resumes -- work experience -- which helps them secure future employment.

The answer, once again, is enforcement of existing immigration laws. Teens willing to earn their way in the working world shouldn't have to compete against illegal immigrants -- who shouldn't be working here in the first place.

My teen has to register at the high school for a work permit, they only allow so many hours and all kinds of regulations.

Why would any employer want to hire a teen when they can get an adult at slave full time, no regulations, and for many no taxes to be paid as it is all under the table?

I would care to guess that teen unemployment was low in the south before the civil war too, and the funny thing is, that our side was have to of supposed to of won that conflict!

High minimum wage rates also cause a fall off in teen employment -- although I agree that the illegal alien angle may be a bigger factor now.

They're taking the jobs from the teen, but they're also taking them from the primary breadwinner in many places. If an employer can hire Joe US citizen for $20.00 an hour and pay benefits, but has the option to pay Jose Mexico citizen $10.00 and hour and no benefits, then the US citizen breadwinner often loses out.
When our economy takes even the slightest dip backwords it will become more evident. A bigger decline will be disastrous.

There's work everywhere I look, even for teens. In preparation for college this fall, my 18-year-old daughter has two summer jobs. During the day, she answers the phone for an air-conditioning contractor. At night, she works at Blockbuster Video. Neither of these jobs is on the fast track to career success, but they work for her.

She wants to make animated movies, so she's using the Blockbuster experience to learn a lot more about movies and about what people like in movies. In her day job, between phone calls, she watches the free rentals she gets from Blockbuster. The money is going towards setting up and paying for an apartment optimized for serious studying and gourmet cooking (which she learned over the last year by watching Alton Brown).

I picked strawberries and dug potatos when I was a teenager. It taught me a valuable lesson - That I didn't want' to do it when I got older.

I think it's pretty ironic that we pay welfare benefits to people because "there are no jobs" and then allow illegal immigrants into the country "Because they do the jobs that Americans won't." If welfare recipients were bussed to the fields and paid by the bushel it would solve several problems. Kids who have to pick vegitables for a living would learn the value of staying in school. It would also keep them off the streets and out of trouble.

What would your reaction be if you found out that Amercian tax dollars are being used to build and staff "DAY LABOR" CENTERS for the purpose of providing work outlets for labor provided by illegal aliens?

If your neighbor is using illegals to mow his lawn or fix his roof RAT HIM OUT. This is one way we can stop this.

In my area follwing your advise would result in a fine for frivolous use of law enforcement assets as well as a severe scolding for racial insensitivity.

Only if you are foolish enough to use your own name or call from a traceable phone!

Around here the police probably would try to trace such a call. Illegals mean serious $$ and power to the local ruling class - as far as they're concerned the more the better.
