"Starr County vexed after MS-13 arrest [Roma, Texas]"
The Monitor ^ | August 12,2005 | Travis M. Whitehead
Posted on 08/13/2005 3:50:16 PM PDT by SwinneySwitch
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "ROMA A day after a member of the notorious Mara Salvatrucha gang was arrested in connection with the beating death of an immigrant smuggler north of here, Roel Ramirez said he feared for his familys safety.
He also worries about leaving people alone at his cattle and wildlife ranch nine miles north of here, where people from all over the world come to view and photograph birds.
"Its very, very scary," said Ramirez of the possible presence of the El Salvadoran gang, also known as MS-13. "I spend a lot of time at the ranch. (On Tuesday), my ranch hand said he intercepted 20 people. Even with a high fence around the perimeter of the ranch, they got in."
Ramirez said his ranch hand shouted to the group to leave, and they quickly scattered. That incident ended peacefully.
However, the Starr County Sheriffs Department plans to file charges today in connection with another incident that left an immigrant smuggler dead early Wednesday.
Sheriff Rey Guerra said smugglers, or coyotes, were leading a group of 25 undocumented immigrants through Starr County when five members believed to be part of the MS-13 gang attacked one of the smugglers, apparently in retaliation for another Salvadoran immigrant who smugglers removed from the group.
At the mere mention of MS-13 from witnesses of the crime, authorities went into action."

"American Life League's first-ever Pro-life Memorial Day will unite people across our land under the common message that abortion is a violent act that has taken a toll of unthinkable proportions."
Nationwide participation is expected for this event, as individuals will be invited to plan and take part in Pro-life Memorial Day prayer services and similar events in their local communities on that day."

FORMER IMAM OF LODI MOSQUE TO BE DEPORTED FROM THE UNITED STATES
SAN FRANCISCO One week after an immigration judge ruled that he posed a threat to the community, the former head of the Lodi mosque returned to immigration court where he agreed to accept an order of removal to his native Pakistan.
At a brief hearing this afternoon, Shabbir Ahmed, 39, advised Immigration Judge Anthony Murry that he was abandoning his legal fight to remain in the United States and would return to Pakistan. Judge Murry issued the removal order at the conclusion of todays hearing.
ICE is gratified by what happened in immigration court today, said San Francisco ICE chief counsel Ronald E. Le Fevre. Once he leaves the United States, Mr. Ahmed will no longer be in a position to advance any doctrine of hate from within our community. Today we are one step closer to that goal.
Todays turn of events follows a custody hearing last week where attorneys for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presented evidence tying Ahmed to the Taliban and Al Qaeda. During that proceeding, ICE attorneys introduced a diagram showing the relationship between Ahmed and several other Lodi-area men who have been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
One of those individuals, Imam Mohammad Adil Khan, who was arrested on immigration violations, agreed last month to be removed to Pakistan. Two other men, Umer Hayat, and his son, Hamid Hayat, have been indicted on criminal charges in connection with the case.
According to testimony offered by an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Hamid Hayat went to an Al Qaeda training camp in Pakistan where he was schooled on how to commit violent acts targeting Americans and American institutions. Upon returning to the United States, the FBI agent explained the younger Hayat was to await orders for his mission, orders that were to be relayed through Ahmed.
According to ICE attorneys, Ahmeds long-term goal was to establish a madrassah or religious school in Lodi similar to the madrassah in Rawalpindi, Pakistan where he and Mohammad Adil Khan previously worked. Evidence presented at last weeks proceeding showed that this madrassah has been used to recruit individuals to engage in jihad.
Ahmed was arrested by ICE agents June 6 for violating the terms of his visa. ICE officials will begin making travel arrangements immediately for the clerics return to Pakistan. Travel arrangements are also pending for Mohammad Adil Khan.

Prisoners advised of right not to answer interrogators
U.S. military sources tell Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin that American Civil Liberties Union attorneys have been permitted to advise Guantanamo Bay prisoners, including Taliban and al-Qaida operatives, that they have the right not to answer the questions of interrogators.
In addition, the Pentagon has brought in a veteran staff attorney from the ACLU to serve as chief defense counsel in future military tribunals.
That story is breaking now at the premium, online, intelligence newsletter published by the founder of WND.

Police foil gas attack on Commons [London, U.K.]
London Sunday Times ^ | August 21, 2005 | David Leppard and Robert Winnett
Posted on 08/20/2005 8:56:02 PM PDT by Enchante
SCOTLAND YARD believes it has thwarted an Al-Qaeda gas attack aimed at ministers and MPs in parliament. The plot, hatched last year, is understood to have been discovered in coded e-mails on computers seized from terror suspects in Britain and Pakistan.
Police and MI5 then identified an Al-Qaeda cell that had carried out extensive research and video-recorded reconnaissance missions in preparation for the attack.
The encrypted e-mails are said to have been decoded with the help of an Al-Qaeda supergrass. By revealing the terrorists code he was also able to help MI5 and GCHQ, the governments eavesdropping centre at Cheltenham, to crack several more plots.
The discovery of the suspected Commons nerve gas plot was behind the decision to increase security around parliament this summer.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A Canadian Forces sniper who set a distance record by killing an al-Qaida fighter from more than two kilometres away has quit in frustration and may go into mercenary work.
Master Cpl. Arron Perry made national headlines twice in 2002: the first was anonymous, after he shot an al-Qaida fighter in Afghanistan from 2,430 metres, a world record.
The second was public and ugly. Perry, 33, and a 13-year veteran, was accused of discreditable conduct after he allegedly cut the finger off an al-Qaida corpse, defecated on another and then had his picture taken with a corpse that had a lit cigarette hanging from his lips and a sign around his neck reading "F**k Terrorism."
The investigation was eventually dropped and no charges were ever laid, but Perry's reputation was left in tatters."

HAMBURG, Germany (Reuters) - More than 1,000 German police were deployed in a large-scale search for three terror suspects in the north German port city of Hamburg on Thursday, a police spokesman said.
Roadblocks and controls were set up at 12 points in Germany's second city after an Arabic-speaking witness overheard the men at a bus stop on Wednesday, praising Allah and heroism in Arabic. One of the men was carrying a backpack.
