Explosion in Istanbul apartment kills two, injures six

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) — An explosion blew through an Istanbul apartment building Monday, killing two people in what police suspect was a deadly mishap as Kurdish rebels mixed materials for a bomb.

A police official said the two men killed were believed to be members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. The officer, like most Turkish officials, was not permitted to speak on the record.

The blast blew out windows in the five-story apartment building and injured six people as it threw glass and debris onto the street below, private CNN-Turk television said.

The explosion was originally thought to have been an accidental natural gas explosion, but a utility crew at the scene said there was no gas hookup in the apartment where the explosion occurred, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The separatist PKK, which is considered a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, has increased its attacks in Turkey recently.
