"On this day in 1945, Emperor Hirohito broadcasts the news of Japan's surrender to the Japanese people." Also on this day in history, the Panama Canal opened in 1914.

My mom turned 80 yesterday and told me about her 20th birthday..august 14 1945. She had gone to the movies that night w/ her folks and when they came out people where
spilling out into the streets(Ft Worth,Tx) and celebrating the just announced surrender of Japan. She said the famous NY photo of the soldier kissing the girl was on august the 14th.. and that was and always would be VJ Day to her and her generation... FWIW
