The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

It's hardly a unique fashion statement for a mass transit rider: a Yankees-style cap, and a "New York" sweat shirt.

But the New York Police Department is teaming with British authorities to determine whether those items were worn by suspects in the London terror cases to send a "purposeful message" to the city, according to an NYPD officials.

David Cohen, the NYPD's deputy commissioner of intelligence, raised the concern earlier this week at a security briefing for business leaders at police headquarters in Lower Manhattan.

Tehran, 30 August (AKI) - The United States will not be the first country in which Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will travel in his first foreign visit as Iran's newly elected president. Scheduled to attend the summit of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September, Ahmadinejad will instead be making a stop in Cuba and Venezuela before heading to the United States for the UN summit, according to the Iranian news agency, Farda News.

Ahmadinejad would have been to the United States, to participate at the meeting of the UN general assembly. However, advisors to the conservative Iranian president have apparently advised him against his debut on the international scene in the country that Iran often refers to as the "Great Satan."

"Ahmadinejad on his trip to New York will be making a stop in Caracas to meeting with Hugo Chavez [the Venezuelan president] and after that to Havana to meet with [the Cuban leader] Fidel Castro," said a report on Farda News.

The 60th meeting of the UN general assembly is set to begin on 14 September.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The report said the terrorists commonly used temporary visas to gain entry to the United States, and that 18 of them held student visas and another four had applications approved to study in the United States.

At least 17 of the terrorists used visitor visas -- either tourist or business -- to gain entry, although there were 11 instances of passport fraud and 10 cases of visa fraud, the report said. In total, 13 of the terrorists overstayed their temporary visas.

The report, written for CIS by Janice Kephart, who served as counsel to the National Commission on Terror Attacks Upon the United States, said the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were not "an isolated instance of al Qaeda infiltration into the United States."

Dozens of operatives both before and after September 11 had "managed to enter and embed themselves in the United States," actively carrying out plans to commit terrorist acts against U.S. interests or support designated foreign terrorist organizations, it said."

BAGHDAD, Iraq — More than 600 pilgrims heading for a Shiite shrine in northern Baghdad (search) on Wednesday were killed in a huge crush when a railing on a bridge across the Tigris River (search) collapsed, a police commander said.

Iraqi Police told Fox News that at least 635 people were killed and at least 237 were wounded.

Brig. Gen. Khalid Hassan said that many of the people had died in the crush or were drowned after falling off the al-Aima Bridge (search).

Hassan, who commands the police in the capital's Azamiyah (search) district, said the accident occurred due to the immense crowd that tried to cross the bridge.

Police confirmed that that someone in the crowd said there may be a suicide bomber among the crowd, sparking a panic.

Television reports said about one million pilgrims from Baghdad and outlying provinces had gathered near theImam Mousa al-Kadim (search) shrine in the capital's Kazimiyah (search) district for the annual commemoration of the Shiite saint's death.

Earlier, several mortar and rocket rounds hit the area around the shrine, killing seven people and injuring at least 40. A U.S. military statement said Apache helicopters fired on the attackers after observing the rocket launches, which occurred about two hours before the bridge accident.
