The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

It's hardly a unique fashion statement for a mass transit rider: a Yankees-style cap, and a "New York" sweat shirt.

But the New York Police Department is teaming with British authorities to determine whether those items were worn by suspects in the London terror cases to send a "purposeful message" to the city, according to an NYPD officials.

David Cohen, the NYPD's deputy commissioner of intelligence, raised the concern earlier this week at a security briefing for business leaders at police headquarters in Lower Manhattan.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "HIDALGO — A bomb threat shut down the bridges to and from Reynosa in both Hidalgo and Pharr for more than an hour Friday night.

"We don’t know if (the threat came from) the bridge in Texas or Reynosa; we are reviewing both," said Carlos Hernández Gallardo of the Reynosa fire and rescue team.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., when the anonymous phone threat was made to both bridges, port officials decided to close the bridges and the surrounding area as a precaution, said Rick Pauza, a Laredo-based spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Officials at the bridge said they could not remember another time the international bridges had ever been closed, though Pauza said a bomb threat had been received last year."

When I mess things up, i do it grand scale, there was a

Regarding contingency plans, I have cats and use clumping kitty litter that comes in 5 gallon plastic containers, After they are empty, I sanitize the containers with bleach water, rinse them, then fill them with water that I store (and empty and refill every 6 months per water storage recommendations). It may not sound appealing, but in the event there is no water available, it can be used for emergency laundry, bathing, etc. Empty milk and water jugs are just as fillable and storeable as the larger containers. When I refill them, I dump the older stored water on trees and plants outdoors, thereby serving useful purpose and not wasting the water.

No, I'm not a Martha Stewart wanna-be, but I do want to be able to have a decent degree of personal hygeine and available water in a worst-case scenario.

I value lurkers, just as you do Granny, but if people think they can do something better than somebody else, then they are welcome to come out of lurking and do it themselves...just my opinion! I would think someone would be more apt to complain about content of the post, than lines, but it's a Free Repubic, after all. I, for one, have no problem with the lines in the posts and am thankful you choose to post links and comments here (smiling).

Personal hygiene is most important to maintain morale. I keep extra cloths (including socks), soap, wash cloths, toothbrush and toothpaste in the car.

Feeling clean is feeling good and if you feel good you can deal much better with adverse conditions.

MD, I applaud your preparations. We can all take a lesson from you.

Just took Clyde out for an attempted walk. Got about 200 yards from the house and heard a gunshot. It was not a firecracker, I've been around both and know the difference. About 30 seconds later there was another one. Then Clyde got hinky. Spooked is the best way to put it. Very unusual, but he wanted to head back to the house - in a BIG hurry which is exactly what we've done. I trust my instincts and I trust Clyde's even more than mine.

Right now Clyde is sitting (not laying) right in front of the front door, ears standing which is also unusual. I have my .357 within reach and have reported the shots to the police. I've already seen several cruisers patrolling the area.

Strange for a small town.

By the way, another thing I've been keeping a good stock of is toilet paper. Customary household use supplies will not go far if you are enscounced in your house and do not want to leave for whatever reason. You can scrimp on food with negligible results, but TP scrimping could be unsanitary and breed disease. Sorry, it had to be TP'd ("covered.")

We're okay here MD. With Clyde here no one can sneak up and the .357 means I am better able to handle any situation that might arise.

What I heard sounded like a .380 or a 9mm. Seemed be be about 200 yards to the north. What really surprised me was Clyde's reaction. He got really nervous and wanted to get back home fast - we ran.

I'm hearing no sirens and all seems to be quite now. No unusual activity out front. Clyde seems a bit calmer but still sitting in front of the door being very alert.

Probably some drunk shooting a gun in the air.

Wouldn't think so. I'm in the middle of downtown - business district (keep in mind this is a VERY small town). It's about 10pm where I am - this was about 15 minutes ago. Plenty dark.

US warns of new attacks on London

The US warning has been circulated among law enforcement agencies and fuel transport agencies. Although a preamble states that “no other intelligence exists to corroborate this specific threat”, the intelligence report is highly specific.

It says: “Al-Qaeda leaders plan to employ various types of fuel trucks as vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIED) in an effort to cause mass casualties in the US (and London), prior to September 19. Attacks are planned specifically for New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. It is unclear whether the attacks will occur simultaneously or be spread over a period of time. The stated goal is the collapse of the US economy.”

The document goes on to suggest that the proposed methods will involve suicide drivers: “Some of the vehicles used will be hijacked. The type of vehicle may be anything from gasoline tanker trucks to trucks hauling oxygen and gas cylinders. Water trucks filled with gasoline or other highly combustible material may also be used. The detonation of the vehicles will be carried out by driving them into gas stations or ramming explosive-laden vehicles into the trucks carrying the fuel.”
