AZ: Migrant break-ins common in southern Ariz.

PHOENIX (AP) - When burglars broke into Rep. Jim Kolbe's cabin last month, they ignored an antique rifle and other valuables. Instead, the intruders ate some food, used the shower and took some clothes from the home less than 30 miles from the Mexican border, near the nation's busiest corridor for illegal immigrants.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada regularly hears about migrants burglarizing homes as they cross the Arizona desert. Two or three such break-ins are reported in the county each month, and residents complain about trespassers every day, he said Thursday. "It happens. And it probably happens more than we get reports on," Estrada said. "It stands to reason. We have a lot of people going through Santa Cruz County and all the border counties."

Kat Rodriguez, coordinating organizer for the human rights group Derechos Humanos, said residents in southern Arizona have come to expect occasional stories of migrants who need food or a place to rest breaking into homes.

"It's frustrating for them and no one likes it, but they know it's desperation," she said.

Rodriguez said she has never heard of an immigrant stealing jewelry or other valuables, but understands that the burglaries contribute to homeowners' negative feelings toward migrants.

"They feel violated and there's no way around it," she said.

Betty Proost said she felt that way after suspected migrants broke into her Patagonia home in February 2004 while she was at a doctor's appointment. The burglars didn't make a mess but drank some Sprite and took some clothes, an expensive watch, a few handheld games and a bag of marshmallows, she said.

"It took me a long time to get over this," Proost said.

Kolbe, a Republican, had no comment on the break-in, said his spokeswoman, Kristen Hellmer.

But the Rev. Robin Hoover, president of the humanitarian group Humane Borders, called the break-in a "big irony," considering the congressman's work on border issues.

Hoover said, however, that burglaries aren't a huge border issue.

"Considering there's 1.2 million attempts (to cross the border) made every year, it's a relatively minor problem," he said.

We're goig to have to face this issue ourselves. The government is NOT going to do anything about it. Period.

If I were part of a group of an employee owned store.. and we hired a manager who was great at managing...

One who constantly preached security and brought in more and more security and spent lots of our money on cameras and lights and made more rules for employees that they be extra diligent on securing our store...

And then after everyone had gone home...he left the back door open, and the alarm for that door off ..deliberately and then told everyone that there was a perfect explanation as to why that back door had to remain open...

I begin to wonder who he was really working for and what his real intentions were..

I would be looking real hard at what else was going on

If Rod has read this article she can't say that again.

The home owners should get 2 big barking dogs to scare off the illegals....I, myself, would feel tempted to hide and pretend no one was at home and take care of them my self.....

Illegal immigrants have murdered more Americans since 9-11 than the terrorists did on that day. (city of LA alone, 1500-1700 homicide warrants issued for illegals, LA has 17,000 warrants issued for illegal felons)

Once back across the border into Mexico they face little to no chance of ever facing American justice.

Hey, once you've broken one law, why not break them all?

These are not migrants, for heaven's sake. It's an invasion.

These apologists like Rev. Hoover are nuts. How is he helping people if he's encouraging that they break the law? Why doesn't he move to Mexico and clamor for their rights there?

Better yet, ask the question, "WHY DO AMERICAN CITIZENS HAVE TO OBEY OUR LAWS, IF ILLEGAL CRIMINALS DON'T??"

"Take a bow Mr. President and Congress...."

How true. Bush has been a very big disappointment on this issue. The RINOs are a total write off.
