As New York Republicans scurry about for a candidate to run for governor next year, one man, Randy A. Daniels, New York's secretary of state, has already all but raised his hand for such a bid.

Mr. Daniels has hired campaign consultants and a staff, he has set up a small campaign office and has raised money. Even more tellingly, he insists that he could beat any other Republican candidate who might enter the primary seeking to succeed Gov. George E. Pataki.

I've read recently, I forget where, that Pataki has basically ruined whatever was left of the NY Republican party. Didn't want any light to shine brighter than his own. The pubbies should support this guy. They should prevail upon Pirro to run for AG. And I don't know who they should put up against Hillary! How about Peter King?

Here in Washington State, we're seeing that the Washington DC power brokers are picking our candidates for us, against the wishes of the grassroots Republicans. We're fighting a major battle over who is going to control our party, the elected grassroots PCOs or the big boys back east who pour tons of money into their annointed candidates.

Thus far the power brokers have given us Reagan Dunn (the rich shallow son of Jennifer Dunn) running against a really good property rights incombent, and a new guy (head of Safeco Insurance) to run against Maria Cantwell. The Big Boys don't seem to think twice about the political fallout of throwing good "old faithful" candidates who have been working their way up through offices, under the bus so the annointed new guy can go to the head of the line. Watch for this power move in your state soon.
