TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida State University doesn't plan to change its "Seminoles" nickname.
The NCAA decided today to ban schools using Native American names and symbols from hosting championship events. But Florida State President T-K Wetherell says he'll sue the NCAA for its - quote - "outrageous and insulting" decision.
Wetherell says - quote - "This university will forever be associated with the "unconquered" spirit of the Seminole Tribe of Florida."
The NCAA decided to ban the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments. And nicknames or mascots deemed hostile or abusive won't be allowed on team uniforms at collegiate tournaments after February First.
The Seminole Tribe of Florida has issued a resolution supporting Florida State's "Seminoles" nickname.
If the Indians don't care, why does a group of white guys? Unbelievable.
LOL Charlotte brings a veritible RAINBOW of skills to the diversity table, doesn't she!
This Irishman thinks its high time you started to treat us with a little respe.... almost got it out with a straight face..
I think the schools should make a positive out of a negative.
1) File a class-action lawsuit against the NCAA, not as individual schools but as a group of schools illegally singled out for discrimination. Let Alcorn State University(the Braves) be the lead plaintiff. Being a black school, it will be harder to tar them as insensitive to discrimination.
2) Hold a meeting of the affected shools and declare that they will henceforth hold athletic tournaments with each other in a celebration of Native American culture, the right to free speech and the right to free association. Optimally, this would be done during the time of the NCAA basketball tournament. They could probably get ESPN or FSN to buy television rights.
3) Agree that one of the major schools (Florida St. or Illinois) bite the bullet and decline a bid to the NCAA basketball tournament but let the NIT tournament know they will accept a bid there. Preferably a conference champion or a Top 10 team. Multiple teams would be even better.
4) Use money raised in Part 2 to compensate the loss of payout to stage the boycott in Part 3.
5) Point out at every turn that it is the NCAA that is practicing discrimination, not the schools.
This might achieve critical mass where we can force the NCAA into major changes instead of the schools.
Another idea would be to stop naming teams after the aboriginal savages that advanced civilizations found here upon arrival, and name them after the aboriginal savages that were encountered by the Romans and Greeks in ancient times. You could have the Fighting Picts, the Galloping Gauls, the Savage Saxons, the Druids (with fans painted blue for team spirit), the Scythians, the Vandals, the Goths (best for depressed Northeastern schools), the Huns, the Etruscans, the Spartans (wait, we have that one), the Trojans (oops, that one is taken), the Medes, and the Kurds.
If you want to be extreme, name your team the Jews (with Moses as the mascot) or the Aryans (the tribe that settled in Iran and India). Boy, would that excite the PC crowd!
The point to this would be that it would be clear that the use of mascots is to honor the characteristics of the mascot, not demean them, and to remind people who are ignorant of their own history that all of us, including people from the old world, have gone through stages where we were tribal, savage and warlike. If the PC people won't let us be inspired by American aborigines, we will get inspiration from European and near east aborigines. Won't that tick them off?
Ugggg. Come on! I just ate lunch.
;-)
Provided they are from the LGBT community and come prepared to denounce the oppressor.
</InvisibilityCloak> LOL
Now I have to root for them:(
Good, I hope Florida State burns them to the ground. Every other college on the NCAA's hit list should join the fight. I know the University of Utah is looking at their legal options right now.
Correct, and, the only person who sees the NCAA for what its really been for at least the past 2 decades, if not 3.
*That's* why I said the universities -- prodded by their contributing alum -- have to either TELL the NCAA brainstems to "Butt-out", or, terminate their association with the NCAA and begin a new governing body who'll simply coordinate the games and leave team mascot matters to the member universities.
Period.

From post #58: "[Charlotte F. Westerhaus] brings a multitude of skills to this position, which is needed to challenge old mind-sets and ensure the value of diversity and inclusion is fully leveraged,"
Uttered by Floyd Keith, executive director of the Black Coaches Association and a member of the search committee."
FYI.
Personally I'm absolutely certain there're more than enough 5'6" gutless bald headed weasel-like white guy university presidents who'll roll over for this type of insanity, without even a whimper.
Just the same they're not for the most part the instigators -- this time -- either.
>*Fire* 'em.
"I'd have used another f-word"..."On firing the NCAA...I posted some thoughts, but they disappeared into the ether."
BWAHAAAAAAAAA!!!
Hmmmm.
Your entry @#17, huh? :o) (GMTA, FWIW. ;^) )
"The NCAA has gone whacko because of the whackos that are in charge. This is from their site: 'The presidents and chancellors who serve on the NCAA Executive Committee have adopted a new policy to prohibit NCAA colleges and universities from displaying hostile and abusive racial, ethnic, and national origin mascots, nicknames or imagery at any of the 88 NCAA championships.'"
"What is meant by 'hostile and abusive?'"
Why, what they say is "hostile and abusive".
Of course.
"'The NCAA objects to institutions using racial/ethnic/national origin references in their intercollegiate athletics programs,' said NCAA President Myles Brand."
"So it's the PC academic crowd that's making the rules."
Uh-huh.
Those *are* the rules.
Ever wonder how a person possessed of a negative IQ can receive a full scholarship solely because said individual can quickly run *while* carrying an oblong latex sphere filled with compressed air?
Or how in order for such individuals to "qualify" for NCAA athletics, it became necessary to *invent* 4 year baccalaureate degrees such as "Basket Weaving", "French Ceramics" and "Universal Recreation Sciences" et al?
I have.
Many times.
"There is a need for a collegiate athletic organization. But its board should be made up of former coaches, refs, players and alums. And of course, Indians."
Of course.
And perhaps a few others in the name of "diversity" wouldn't hurt, too.
...like the paying fan(s)? ;^)
Well, we all can't be engineers you know..the world needs basket weavers too!! :)))
I love my university, it just sucks to no end that they are trying to do this. If they would have done this 20 years ago when I was a student, I'd be marching in the streets of Tallahassee right about now.
Why go to the bother of suing? A better idea would be to disband the NCAA. If enough colleges and universities told the NCAA to commit a biologically impossible act, we wouldn't have any more of this PC garbage, at least at the collegiate sports level.
It's never too late to protest. I love Ga.Tech, and if some stupid a**hole told me to change our mascot, I'd be pi**ed beyond belief, and would either smash them in the mouth or tell them to STFU and drop dead. We have too many dunces and dumbasses telling us what to do and what not to do, that have absolutely no idea of what the hell they are saying. Diversity??? My a**, politically correct? Kiss my a**.....I assure you I've had enough of these dipshi*s and liberals telling us how to live out damn lives. It's time the NCAA was told to kiss off, and I hope FSU and other affected schools have the cajones to do it. 'Nuff said!!
> A better idea would be to disband the NCAA.
Exactly this point of view has been expressed in several posts to this thread. Alums especially alums who donate need to get the word out to the boards of their alma maters.
Also, NCAA represents bad sportsmanship and a nasty streak in its attempt to destroy NIT.
Oklahoma means land of red people? Indiana is land of the Indians? Which is where the NCAA is located..and their headquarters are in Indianapolis? city of Indians?
RUSH is just pointing this out on his program...awesome.
