Lock down the borders first, Mr. President. Then we can talk about these other programs you'd like to have, AFTER you've stopped the flow of illegals.

We need to demand better triage for this issue. First, handle the emergency that is seriously jeopardizing the security of the nation. Then, start a discussion of how to handle the illegals who are already here.

LOCK DOWN THE BORDERS FIRST, MR. PRESIDENT.

He argued that his proposal for a "guest worker" program is good for employers and illegal immigrants who want a mutually beneficial relationship. What illegalities will he tolerate from U. S. Citizens, I wonder?

Help Americans?

How is letting 1.5 million undocumented people into the country a help?

How is forcing taxpayers to cover medical care and housing for people who are here illegally and don't pay INTO the system a help?

How is it a help that 340,000 pounds of drugs were confiscated in one month alone by border control agents a help considering that most of the drugs gets into the country?

How is it a help that Mexican gangs are committing violent crimes in this country?

Is there not one Congresscritter with a national name going to have the guts to stand up and admit we have a problem?

"If you are a willing employer (and) you have somebody looking for work and you can't find an American, there ought to be a legal way for you to employ that person," he said. "We'd rather have people coming in with a card that said, 'I'm a legal worker,' than trying to sneak across the border."

"If you are a willing employer (and) you have somebody looking for work and you can't find an American, there ought to be a legal way for you to employ that person," he said.

All that an employer would need to do is to call one of the many temporary employment agencies in their area. They can get as many American workers as they need in this way.

Why not just use that legendary Bush focus on doing "what is right" regardless of the politics and just issue a presidential pardon to all the illegal aliens and direct ICE to give them papers?

I don't understand how the president can talk up this ("non-amnesty") amnesty plan and then segue into the subject of national security, as he did in this speech.(http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/08/20050803.html) How can he talk about national security without talking about a wall at our southern border? How can his administration cut back the allotment of 2,000 new BP agents per year to a mere 150? It's just the worst kind of doublespeak.

The administration has tried different ways to spin this "guest worker" vs. border security vs. sovereignty several different ways, each presentation more awkward sounding than the last.

I think each time he mentions it is a trial balloon to see what the reaction is. I feel strongly that Congress will do nothing on immigration/illegals/the border this year or even next; they'll just wait and wait, talk about it from time to time, and let it get worse.

I understand our need to be friends with our neighbors, because of the threats of China and islamic terrorism, but we are only friends to Mexico and they are not friends to us. I wonder if Vicente Fox is secretly threatening the U.S., holding a potential alliance with China over our heads...?

The president has proposed a system under which immigrants would be granted worker temporary worker status, after which they would have to leave the United States.

Does anyone really believe even one illegal alien would ever leave the United States?

Who are the thousands of law enforcement personnel who are going to round up the millions of "temporary workers" and send them home when the time comes?

This is more of Bush's insane open borders policy to please big business which continues to illegally hire millions of illegals.

Good Grief!!

We ALREADY HAVE a frikkin' "GUEST WORKER PROGRAM". It's called "lining up legally at an American Consulate overseas, waiting your turn, and receiving a US VISA to LEGALLY enter the United States based on orderly immigration law and US requirements."

Sheesh, what part of "illegal" doesn't the President understand??!! His and Mr. Rove's 'strategic' policy and that of his predessors in the White House so abruptly and rudely slaps all the LEGAL IMMIGRANTS in the face who are here on our soil, and essentially tells theme they were saps for wasting time, patience and fees to go through legal lines and channels. When will we stop rewarding ILLEGAL BEHAVIOR??

We already know it will benefit employers, that has been one of our screaming points (note I didn't say talking) on this issue.

I am a Bush fan but not on his border policy, thanks very much. I do not want to be "equal" to a third world country, if they want to be equal to MY country then they can damn well work for it in THEIR country and not try to ride in on my back and the backs of other hard working Americans.

Utter codswallop. When the female illegal pops out a kid right after crossing the border they all get a free card to stay here because the kid is born American. Stop the shell game Mr. Bush.

Oh yeah Mr President, US Employers and FOREIGN workers?

KMA Georgie

He needs to start worrying less about GD Foreign Workers and start worrying more about US!

Try Closing the Borders and then rounding up all of those here Illegally, going after those Employers who violate the Law by Hiring Illegal Aliens and shutting THEIR asses down.

This Guest workers program will not work because our government will not force these guest's to return to thier countries of origin.

Hmmm

Just thought of something.. if the Army is having so much trouble reaching it's recruiting goals, why not take these Men who are crossing the borders to do jobs that Americans won't do (it's sarcasm), and put them in the field in Iraq.

If they want to come work in the land of the free and home of the brave, let them PROVE it with a 2 years stint in Iraq and/or Afghanistan.

Then offer them the chance to become citizens.

Ok yeah it does sound silly, but it would certainly solve a manpower shortage problem and .. well the Government could pay them 2.00 per hour to do the job and get a bargain at the same time.

After all, isn't this what they say US Employers want?
