How quickly the tune changes. Just days ago, our Freepers were themselves lauding this guy's conservative credentials. Now, they are lambasting Bush for nominating him.
But if we can't figure it out, then why do we expect Bush to? The fact is that no one will know how any nominee will vote until he's on the bench for about a year. All we can do is do our best, and hope that it suffices.
He promised to nominate someone like Scalia or Thomas. Plus he's the President. It's in his job description.
Bush had the time to do a background check, and could easily have come across this. Freepers don't have access to that kind of background check so it took some time to find out.
There are no sure things, but there are better bets than Roberts. He could have nominated someone like Luttig, Garza or Alito, who has a long and uncontroverted record on the bench and has never waivered from their conservative judicial philosophy. Instead, we get a game of Russian roulette.
