GOP wants urban voters

Republican leaders on Thursday used Pittsburgh -- a city controlled by Democratic elected officials for seven decades -- as an example of where the GOP hopes to expand its membership with minorities and inner-city voters who traditionally align more with Democrats.
"We believe there are many people that populate these urban cities that are Republican-leaning," said Republican National Committee Co-Chairwoman Jo Ann Davidson. "We're not giving up on the urban centers." Davidson, a former Speaker of the House in the Ohio Legislature, said Pittsburgh also was chosen as the site for the RNC's annual summer meeting, which started yesterday, to underscore the importance of Pennsylvania in national politics and show support for U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum's re-election bid next year.
Santorum, the third-ranking Republican in the Senate, is facing a serious challenge in 2006 from state Treasurer Bob Casey Jr., who is a heavy favorite to win the Democratic nomination.
"I think it will be what most people are considering the premium Senate race in the country," Davidson said. Santorum, a two-term senator from Penn Hills, gets the spotlight today when he and Davidson speak during a luncheon at the Omni William Penn Hotel, Downtown, where the three-day conference is taking place. RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman is scheduled to speak at a general session this morning.
The theme of the conference is "Give Us A Chance, We'll Give You A Choice: Strengthening Lincoln's Legacy."
Mehlman, who became chairman in January after managing President George Bush's re-election campaign last year, has made several speeches articulating the GOP's "outreach" objective to broaden the party's base. I'm not shocked. I'll never go to a republican club meeting where I live. The white cons treated the lone black republican running for office like sh*t, even laughing while he was trying to make his speech.

That's not all bad, I guess. There's something to be said for honesty. Don't smile in my face and then stab me in the back. Therefore, they should all say exactly what they think. We all feel better after a big, wet, warm, stinky bowel movement, right?
I thnk the GOP can forget the share of the urban vote that are professional liberals, beneficiaries of democrat machine politics, and assorted other of that ilk. As the barking moonbattery of the left becomes more shrill and more people realize it, I believe we will see that identification within a community of ideas and interests will be the driving force of conservative growth... I think in many ways the old demographics are already fading, but it does not serve the interests of many political groups to see that.

My definition of 'urban' is more to do with attitude, than the color of skin or the location where somebody lives. They tend to want more liberal policies, whereas I believe blacks in the middle and upper classes are more conservative. In other words, to me the term "urban" implies liberal. Now ask ten different people what "urban" means, you'll probably get ten different answers.
All I'm saying is that the GOP won't get more voters by going liberal.

You have a kind soul.
The reason people are concerned is because the growth of exurbs, with all the new Republican voters there, has been nearly matched by rising Democratic control of cities and inner suburbs. Exurban growth is fantastic for congressional and legislative victories, for reasons having to do with distribution of votes and districts, but it does nothing for statewide elections.
They may do so for a while. But like the gingerbread boy who rode across the creek on the back of the fox he trusted , he soon found himself in the fox's stomach and that was the end of him. So it will be with our present politicians - both Democrat and Republican.
The Hispanics are not here to become good Democrats or Republicans. They are here to occupy, and that means they will have their own party and it will rule.
As far as local Repub organizations go, I avoid them also... too much internal politics and pi$$ing contests. The one advantage of NM is that with so few people, you have pretty good access to the congresscritters themselves, so the heck with the party.
