Well, the Scientologists have a point but it's one that's been made by countless others before them. And they don't recommend vitamins and exercise, they recommend mega, super normal doses of vitamins and exercise well above the usual recommendations. When they recommend these vitas, do they first take a blood panel to be sure that those doses are safe for each individual? Not with their phobias of doctors and 'medicine'. If someone collapses from the mega vita dose or sauna or exercise, they are figured to be somehow tainted or infected (what's that word they use?) and useless for the group and unsafe to be around lest they 'infect' others. If, unlike Lisa McPherson for instance, they recover from this state, they are pronounced 'cured', evidence of the 'effectiveness' of the 'treatment'. Win-win for them. Not so for the lucky members. Blech.
Lucky you did! Dear me, it sounds like child abuse. It would be for any other group, but somehow the cult has made themselves above the law in certain ways.

Thanks. I knew they had a term for it, I just couldn't recall it offhand. Creepy how there is a 'new' term for everything, especially medical things, reflecting their disdain for everything conventionally medical, especially, it seems, the psychological. Now, alternative treatments are one thing, but they seem to reject everything that modern or western medicine has established in recent decades, and anything else that might conflict with cult 'techniques'. Gotta give Hubbard credit for that, can't have people getting conflicting information from the medical community.
True, I didn't mean to imply intentional abuse or intent to harm on the dad's (or your) part, but it is a little cruel to keep a kid in a sauna so long they risk heat stroke. Just to follow the cult's teachings. It seems you recognized that even then in some way.

Anti-seizure medications are used in psychiatry too, as well as, all sorts of medications.
I had to look up Paxil. Never heard of the stuff. If indeed it treats "social anxiety disorder," then it must be a bit like Free Republic. Two teaspoons of Freeping is a great pick-me-up when one is feeling blue.
In this particular flim-flam, they made upwards of 300% profit with what used to be recognized instantly as a bribe: "... The Post reported this week that Scientologists from around the country pumped nearly $115,000 into the Manhattan borough-president campaign of Councilwoman Margarita Lopez, who has steered more than $600,000 in public funds to the facility.
Interesting that the Scientologists knew just which corrupt politician to turn to when they were bent on raiding public funds. It would seem that Ms. Lopez was batting her eyes and wearing her "For Sale" sign.

There is a scientology technique called a "contact assist" that is done to relieve the immediate effects of a minor injury. For example, if on banged their elbow on a door, they would do a contact assist by touching it back to the place they banged it, trying to duplicate the circumstances of the injury as accurately as possible to make the psychic component vanish. (A memory and an exact duplicate of the memory are like matter and antimatter, or so says the theory)
Sooooooo, I was at a party, and went into the kitchen for a soda or something, and there was a scientology chick touching the frying pan and saying "OUCH! OUCH! OUCH!"
I watched a couple cycles of this performance and finally said, "Ummmm, Peggy? What are you doing?"
"I burned myself making popcorn and I'm doing a contact assist."
I said, "That's nice, don't you think you should turn the burner off and let it cool first?"
"You can DO that???"
Since I've been FReeping, I've been able to adjust my dose down...
