RALEIGH, N.C. -- A Pitt County woman in her late-teens is the first in the state to be infected this year with the West Nile virus.
The woman was hospitalized in late July, but is now recovering at her home, said state Health Director Leah Devlin. The virus caused an inflammation of the woman's brain and spinal cord.
Most people infected with West Nile virus do not develop any disease at all, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Symptoms of the mosquito-borne illness may include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, loss of consciousness, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis. The elderly and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk.
I assume Ive been exposed and am now immune.
